To the question about why tattoos instead of piercings... for me the first thing is the fact that a piercing is just pieces of metal, glass or wood running through your skin (given, you can customize that stuff quite a bit), and tattoos are actual works of art that have an objective design and mean quite a bit. The other thing is that tattoos are a life-long committment and therefore, should (in my humble opinion) have a lot of thought put into them.
