Chris41, Steven M and I went winching last Sunday. We searched a few canals, and a river, for a spot to hit but they were either too empty or had way too fast of a current. So went went to some local state operated lakes hoping to find a shoreline to that we could winch.

The first lake seemed perfect. a nice sandy shore, and plenty of lightweight picnic tables that we could have drug into the water. It was too good to be true. We didn't even have our wetsuits on fully before a park ranger questioned us about the winch and what we were planning on doing with it. He called his supervisor and said that they deemed the activity to be unsafe and wouldn't permit it. We left that lake and went over to another lake near by that I've rode a few times behind a boat. This spot i knew of was in the back of the lake, where the lazy rangers never patrol for the most part. The spot we decided to setup was a "pond" that was created by the lake levels dropping, and leaving behind a winch spot. The spot was perfect in size, depth, and water temp. The water temp was so warm that we didn't even need wetsuits! it was heaven; I haven't rode without a dry/wet suit in California since last September (I seriously can't wait for warmer weather).

Nothing crazy went down trick wise, and we also didnt have a rail setup (yet Wink ) But that didn't matter to us, we still had a great time. What more can you ask for, winching with your friends in a great spot--and not getting kicked out!

Here are some shots we took during our session:

Just out of curiosity, what kind of loads does the winch put on the brakes of your vehicle? Do you leave it in gear (like you would parking a manual?) or do you use the parking brake?

This winching thing is seeming like a good alternative to a jet ski...

Laughing

randal, Not much of a load at all. He had his car in park and had the ebrake set. While getting up it jerks the car a little but it doesnt mess up your pull at all.

ripava82, lots of questions huh? haha, jk thats okay. I'm the same way. When the rider falls or gets to the end of the winch run you kill the engine so that the handle wont fly at you and kill you. Laughing some people have added brake systems to their winches.

Brakes add weight to your winch as well. As with everything in life, there are pros and cons to everything. For this ReWind prototype, a break is not needed as the spool is not that heavy, thus it does not have that much momentum.

Yeah Chris B, all your winching trips look like so much fun!
