Hey everyone, im new to the forums let me introduce my self first, My names James Ive been wakeskating for about 2-3 weeks now, use to wakeboard alot 2 years ago, im 16 and I ride a Thomas 40" Bi-Lev...anyways today I went out on my friends jet ski and I have my shuv-its done perfect and I was working on my 3-shuvs today, I get them all the way around but slip out on the landings...anyways I was doing one and did the biggest split of my life it hurt my knee really bad and it fealt like I rolled my ankle. Well I decided to get out and let my friend ride..after a little more pulling I decided I would take it easy and go back out. I land two shuvs back to back and Im feeling pretty good and decided to do an inside out shuv and what do you know I end up splitting again. Im pretty sure im going to need crutchs because i am in major pain and well I was just wondering how often does this happen and is there anything I should look to do to prevent it??

-James

nothin you can really do to prevent it other than catching the board with both feet instead of one. Most of us have all done it at one point or another. Hell, Byerly recently dislocated his knee doin an inside out 3 shuv.

-LoGiK-, Trust me i know your pain... maybe even worse. I just recently had a lovely experience of landing one foot on one off while shuving over a dock. Doctor says its just a serious strain to my MCL, thank god, because i do not need "another" knee surgery.

Best advice i can give you is to try to concentrate more on where your feet are when you are catching the board in the air. People including myself sometimes happen to get a little too "hucky chucky" and that usually leads to getting hurt. But in all honesty it does not really sound like getting a bigger board is going to resole your problem. Im 6ft tall about 168 or so and i ride a 40.5... i have ridden bigger decks and they really are less fun and more than likely not going to fix your problem. You just have to learn to fix you.

Its part of wakeskating and skateboarding as well... sometimes shizzle just happens.

if youve only been wakeskating for 3 weeks, i sugest slowing down a bit(i dont mean slowing down the speedof the boat). work on lip tricks and just have fun with it. dont pressure yourself to progress really fast. youve got shuvits so start working on consistency and then lip combos. you dont really need to listen to me,but i get stressed out when i try to learn a lotof stuffin a short period of time.

and get that knee looked at if you tore your acl you're better off getting it fixed and you'll probably want your downtime to be this winter and not in the summer or spring.

Man that is too bad. That is exactly why I dont do much wake to wake stuff. I blew out my ACL years ago wakeboading and have mostly wakeskated since then.

Bret, I see your brother ride at the skatepark all the time, that dude rips. I've heard you're pretty good on the wakeskate too.
The key to rehabing a knee injury like that is keeping it strong, if you get surgery or not you need to learn some rehab excercises to keep it stong. In the long run you are probably better of getting a blown knee fixed.

Wakemitch I know what you mean, but the thing is that day I was out on the jetski and the lip tricks ( first time riding behind a jet ski, I usually ride behind my friends super air natique )...I just wasnt feeling, although I did land my inside out shuv-it for the first time on the Ski. Also I have been working alot on my switch cause I heard its good to learn switch in the beggining. Another thing is, when you do a shuv-it on an A-symmetrical board I sometimes feel screwed because to me its alot more difficult to do a shuvit on the nose is there any tips, I should know of?

but then on September. 2, 2005 i blew my knee. (tore my ACL in half) by doing the splits as my chest went out the front. i get surgery tomarrow, the 29th. wish me luck! ha this sucks
at least its at the end of the season

logik, it is weird that you have a harder time shuving it switch... I feel I can pop stuff higher with the bi switch cause the nose is wider and feels *steeper* lol

and yeah, split do suck big time. As sleu said it's about concentration. But sometimes it just happens. One of my worse split was during a shuv. I was riding agaisnt the wind and the board got caught and flew up and got stuck on my front foot in the air... The landing wasn't a pretty sight lol

It happens to me a couple times per season maybe... One way to prevent it is to think about bending the knees as soon as you feel you are spliting. This will cause an edge to catch water and the board will sink rather than skip on the water and split you further...
