i bought one of those 484 blank decks. it came in yesterday and i was wondering if i needed to put any sealer on there? it feels like plain wood but i'm not really sure since i have no experience in this department.
what do you guys think? recommend me something, thanks. |

ok, so what should i look for, any certain brand/kind? and how do i go about applying it? how many layers, etc,
<--noob
on a side note, we built a 9 1/2 ft. rail this past weekend and hit it. i hit it and rode it out my first try. i landed a FS 180 shuvit a few times but always let go of the rope for some stupid reason. |

| I think a couple coats of any marine sealant would work just fine. Then just apply more as needed. Especially if you are going to be hitting that rail with it. |

Put a couple drops of water on it. What happens ? If it remains beaded up and does not penetrate the wood, then it has been sealed. My guess is that it's sealed, albeit lightly since it has grip.
If not, I would just apply a sealer thinned out about 25% for the first coat to aid penetration into the wood. Then subsequent coats (2X) at full strength covering about 1/4 inch of the grip. This would hold the grip edge better anyway. The grip substrate is prolly more substantial than paint if it's properly applied. |
