I am in the middle of making my own wakeskate right now in wood class and i am about to laminate it.
I have:
-1/8 inch russian birch plywood
-West systems 2 part marine epoxy
My plan was to lam. 4 layers in a jig then after add the proper shapes and sand the top to get a concave. I am aiming for it to weigh about 7-8 lb and my teacher just sugested that i use 3 layers instead of the 4 to keep weight down since i'm going to have the concave pieces on top anyways. Anyone who has made your own skate plz post how many plys you used and how stiff/flexable it turned out. A.S.A.P. I'm hoping to glue in the morning tomarrow if i can get the info.
-And if you made a concave any sugestions on the shape of the pieces that are applied on top, or more pictures would help!
I'll post pics of the jig and how it turned out later.
THanks
JB

I used 2 plys of 1/4 pine on both the boards I made. Reason why I didn't use 1/8 is because a) it's more expensive b) I'm too lazy to cut it all out/glue it all together c) two plys works fine. Both my skates are very, very stiff, and have a good weight to them...don't know exact weight, but they weigh just the right amount for me anyways.
As for concave, there's a thread around here that shows how someone actually built up a concave after they jigged their skate...it turned out really nice...I'll see if I can find the link.

i havent ridden mine yet but i used solid stock. its about 3/8s thick birch. i cut the shape i wanted out then i dadoed grooves into the top six incehs from the tip and six inches from the tail, the dado cut 2/3 through the board leaving approximatly 1/8 inch of wood. i then clamped the board into my jig and filled the grooves with fiberglass resin. i rolled out two layers of fiberglass over the top of the deck while it was in the jig. after that cured i removed the deck from the jig and layed one layer of glass on the bottom. it is now gripped and ready to rip..... this weekend.

| four plys is what i use. it provides alot of strength and stiffness. since all the strength of the skate is really in the glue between the plys then the actual plys themselves you want as much glue as possible. my skate flexes very little. as far as concave goes i think that will be a pain unless you have a nice power sander.

to make the bend for the nose and tail. once clamped in my jig the wood bends there making the 'rocker". my skate is very stiff, i can stand on the nose and tail and it barely bends. but i dont know how it rides yet, ill post on the ride after this weekend. looking forward to 40 degree water and 60-70 air temp, with no wet suit or dry suit! gotta love minnesota.

-=AlexXx=-, to be filled with resin. its pretty cheap and its stronger than wood so he used that to make the tail.

BLP010, A thought when you make your next one cut the slits from the opposite side, and that way when they fill with resin and you ride it leverage wont be trying to pry the groves open like the current design does, but it looks reallly nice, just a little thought I had for your next one

i guess i cant visualize what your saying kento911, could you make a drawing or diagram? thanks, and i was going to ask for some tips or feedback for the next one. i am going to make probably 5 but maybe 10 and seel them to my friends or who ever. it costed me about 35 bucks total to make one. but i think it will be like your winch, the more you make the cheaper they get because of materials like fiberglass and resin.

umm Ill try to be more concise in my explanation, b/c Im feeling lazy right now, if its still not clear then Ill draw you a pic, but basically you know how you currently have cuts from the top of the board that stop about 1/3 from the bottom, well the leverage of the tail is naturally tryin gto pry those open when you ollie, so instead cut from the bottm and stop a 1/3 from the top, (look at you pic and basicall ythink abou tmaking the bend the opposite way you have oit now, so the leverage will push then closed agains the resin you added savvy??

ah i get it, for some reason i thought you ment from tip to tail and i was like....huh, this guy is out of his mind, but now that i read your last post its clear that im out of my mind. thanks for the suggestion, but the only thing is that i would have to make a new jig(which is no big deal) so i might have to try it. thanks for clearing that up kento911
