One of my best friends is a carpenter. He builds high end cabinets, heart pine furniture etc... he will find an old barn out in the country and w/ permission tear it down and get the good heart pine wood out of it. If you don't know, heart pine is very old growth, it's stregth is unbelievable, it's also heavy (the color is amazing too) anyway.. the question.. if you got some of this wood to make a board like the thread shows.... since it is so dense and heavy, would you use it for the bottom layer only? i guess you'd have to build one completely out of heart pine to see how heavy it would be... what all types of wood are typically used in the process? the thread mentioned birch..... what if you used carbon fiber for the "steps" to lighten it up?? the gears are turning..i'm just not sure which dirction they're heading Laughing

to get good strenght an pop, you have to do plys, like 1/8 inch plys, 1/16 would be ideal, but thats kinda pricey, if they even make it, Im not sure. Cross laminate the grains, and I would laminate your carbon in the center of the board, not on the concave steps, and for the concave steps just use cheapy ply, b/c it's goign to be gripped over anyways, and it'll be cheaper, that help, oh and press it with a resin, not wood glue that will increase stiffness and durability, and unfortuantely weight too but oh well, hope this helps a little
