How to start a wakeskate scene

Hey again guys,

so im thinking of staying in long beach this summer and am trying to get a boat and a crew of riders together. i think im going to try and recruit from the skateboard scene out here and give it a shot. any advice for starting a new scene?

asterisk1, Just out of curiosity where do you wakeskate in that L.A. area? Elsinore? I've ridden Pyramid lake north of L.A., but that's not exactly convenient for a Long Beach resident.

Skate park is a decent place to start. You can talk to boating shops that may be selling wakeskates, wakeboards, etc. and see if they have any contacts with any riders in the area. Heck you could even try surf shops. Pretty much every surfer I've shown wakeskating to has been super stoked on it, and they pick up on it really fast.

Ya skatepark would be a good way to go. Problem is a lot of skaters are broke.

Create more lakes, end the drought, eliminate a bunch of boating laws.

At the moment it's not practical for the average person to wakeskate in California. Cable parks are helping but they're still new and expensive.

I actually wakeskate in Long Beach Marine Stadium (where the wakeboard x games used to be held). sadly i stepped on a stingray yesterday and got stung barefoot while walking out to the boat. was one of the worst pains of my life so i dont know if i'll be jumping for joy to ride there again. lol

great idea on recruiting surfers, i got some skaters in mind too. i frequent the skateparks here quite a bit. thanks!

asterisk1, I think the key to building a wakeskating scene anywhere is finding people with the most practical means to ride regularly, get them interested & teach them what wakeskating is all about, & then stoke out the groms to keep the cycle going. Obviously, it's much easier said than done, but I mostly mean to say that you'll have more success trying to recruit potential riders who already have a seadoo or a small boat than you would just going to a skatepark & seeing who likes the idea of skating on water.
