Well, after waiting to try since I got my first board in December, I finally "attempted" last Tuesday. My jetski was pulling me good, but I was plowing water (no way I was going to get up) and snapped the ski rope handle right in half Rolling Eyes . Blah blah blah fast forward to Friday and after 7 or 8 stressful tries I finally got up! About 40x harder than skiing and 10x harder than wakeboarding but I like a challenge! I only went for about 100 yards before a huge wakeboard boat towing tubes made huge waves that my jetski obviously couldn't chop up for me.
I don't feel like I completely know how to properly get up yet, unlike skiing when once you get up the first time you can easily get up each time after that. I feel like when I'm almost above water I start rocking left and right, and that is how I fell most times. All instructional videos tell you to wait until you are completely above water to turn the board, but honestly I feel like it would be easier to turn the board before that. Any suggestions? I'm going back to the lake Sunday if it's good weather.
And btw I would have a GoPro video but took it off right before I got up! I have about 8 good wipeouts on video though haha!

Listen to the instructional videos.
Even though you feel like it might be easier to get up already turned, you are actually causing more drag and you will plow more making it harder on you and whatever is puling you.
When you keep the board perpendicular to the boat/pwc there will be less drag and the boat/pwc wont have to work as hard to get you out of the water. Think about physics and try to reduce the drag as much as possible. This also means don't have the toe edge of the board pointing straight up. Angle it a little towards the boat/pwc.

Once you figure it out, it will be way less work than skiing, and it will be more fun! Wink

I always do this when teaching someone new to get up

sit on the ground and have your friend try and help you up with one hand

if you plant your feet..they cant pull you up , no matter how hard they try

as soon as you release your weight over your ankles and roll forward over your center of gravity..it becomes possible to have them help you to your feet

so when getting up, there is a point when you must let yourself be pulled up over your center

if you are getting a lot of side to side action when you first start going try this

spread your feet out on the board

wide and even

bend your knees all the way and let your arms lock forward with the handle

if you are still a bit wobbly try and keep your elbows to the inside of your knees

this will square you up and keeping your knees bent and your arms locked will help your center of balance be stronger

It's simple. Set yourself up behind the boat like the others have said.. When the boat starts pulling you, push your toes forward.

POPTART, pretty good way of going about it. I'm gonna have to use this next time I help someone get up.

?, once you find that sweet spot of how to do it you will do it everytime. and it is so much more fun than skiiing!

daniel, yeah sitting down yourself and having them pull you up is a great way to show them how to get up

then its really easy for them to learn to keep the board under them when getting up when they learn to work that physics of pulling over their center and tracking the board up and out of the water

ive taught like 5 people to ride this year

Thanks for the tips guys! Spent Sunday with my family on our jetski, then Sunday night I went again. I got up 1 out of 4 times, so I guess I'm improving. It got too dark to go any more so we called it a night. I really tried to keep my toes forward and could feel the board slowly rise to the surface, the way you guys say it should be. I think now I just need to work on staying in a ball until I get above the surface because I stood up early a few times. Unfortunately I don't know when I'm going back out but hopefully will before the summer season ends!

Had a great day yesterday! Got up on my first try since the last time I tried 3 weeks ago! Couldn't have done it without the help from you guys. It's definitely a different feel from skiing. When I ski I like to pop out of the hole immediately but when wakeskating it makes it easier when the driver slowly eases onto the gas. I'll get my gopro vid up tomorrow, just gotta finish exporting it.

Main thing I always stress to new people I take wakeskateing is to lean forward! Get that board nearly flat and don't turn it straight until we are up to speed. I try to put the least amount of strain on the boat as possible and in return it puts less strain on you. I can get up with one hand without much effort.

I had one friend who just wouldn't listen to me and played anchor for an hour one day. After the first 30mins I just let him do what he wanted because he wasn't listening, he learned real quick the next time I took him because he had jello arms for 3 days after playing anchor that first day.

Couldn't agree more Rootar, I'm used to waterskiing so it's always keep the tips up and you pop right up. I was trying to do the same wakeskating and just couldn't get up. Then all you guys helped me and when I started keeping my toes down it's so easy to get up now! It almost feels like I'm going down instead of up because getting to the surface is so gradual. I can see now how these little 25hp boats pull full sized ppl up, because if you have good form it puts very little stress on the boat.
Anyways here's the vid, not very exciting but happy I got up!

ice chest (35-40 pounds)
10 gallons of fuel (75 pounds)
tool bag with plugs, parts, fuel line, rope, etc (50 pounds)
3 wake skates with racks (45 pounds)
my empty boat (450 pounds)
my motor (190 pounds)

yea thats over 1500 pounds in a 13'8" deep v and ive gotten 220 pounds guys up that have never ridden before, my boat tops out at 24mph with a rider in tow faster than anyone wants to ride at forsure.

I also have a fat sack and battery for the front i still havent put in yet.

Nice! What boat do you have? I ride behind a 97 seadoo gtx and I love it, but wish I had something bigger to take friends along and do some double tubing (can only tow one thing at a time bcuz it's a 3 seater). Just applied for a job, and if I save enough cash I'd like to get a sportster 4 tec. Maybe now I could just get a small aluminum with an outboard but jet drives are just so much fun!! Laughing
