|

Ok, I am a new wakeskater, wakeboarder, and wakesurfer. I have been riding behind the families 18 foot bowrider with no ballast or tower and its starting to not cut it anymore. My dad and i have been looking at wake boats but there just so expensive! We finally found a 2002 Mastercraft x10. It has the stock ballast and its loaded! The motor is either the 310 or 330. We could get it for around 24k since it is end of season. I have some questions though. 1. Is this a good, reliable boat? 2. Will a intermediate wakeskater be happy with the wake? 3. What would be the easiest way to put more ballast in(take out hard tanks or just plumb bags in to the hard tanks)? 4. Will the 310 be enough motor for 1500-2000 lbs of ballast? Thanks for the help guys i appreciate it!! |

This is my personal opinion: I don't like to wakeskate behind a sacked out wake boat. A lot of the top name pros barely ride behind decked out boats, and they kill it behind boats with much smaller wakes (well, they kill it behind everything). Don't get me wrong, I have an appreciation for a nicely made boat though. I have more fun riding behind something without a giant wall to hit. A nice easy transition and a clean lip are what I would look for in a wake.
Wakesurfing on the other hand... load that sucker up and swamp it |

FWIW the Mastercraft X10 isnt on a wake-specific hull. MC took one of their existing 'luxury/cruiser' type of boats and added a tower and ballast to it.
1. Given that it's used, the quality/reliability will be more based on the care that the previous owner put into it. MC didn't have any glaring issues in 2003 that I can remember, so if the previous owner took good care of it and the engine is in good shape then you should be alright.
2. An intermediate wakeskater should be happy with that wake. In the limited time that I spent around the X10, I dont remember the wake ever getting 'scary big' until more than 2,000lbs was added to it (in addition to the internal ballast), and even then it still wasn't the same as the X-Star or other wake-specific hull was. The shape of the wake was quite mellow, and lacked that 'buck/kick' that a Nautique or Wakesetter would give you.
3. I THINK I remember the typical ballast for the X-10s being a 500lb fat sac in the bow, another fat sac in the walk through, then an 800 in the middle. The wakeboarders that rode a longer line (80ish feet) would add additional weight to the bow as well. I think the internal ballast for the X-10 in 2003 was in the center/rear of the boat, or maybe only in the rear, so the additional weight up front would help clean up the wake a bit. That's what I remember the typical 'local sponsored wakeboarder' weight setup being...for wakeboarding, and at 23-24 mph. If you're only riding 21-23 you can probably shift some of the weight back or skip the fat sac in the walkthrough. No idea if there are/were aftermarket hard tanks or other options that allowed you to plumb in the tanks like you can do nowadays.
4. No idea.
Can you get the boat out on the water for a demo? If that's possible then you could almost answer all your questions for sure. _________________ facebook.com/TheLiquidPlayground

Ya the wake of a stock 03-04 X10 is NOWHERE near that of a newer Wakesetter or Nautique....I rode behind my buds 2012 VLX this weekend and was literally like hitting a wall trying to get wake to wake. The X10 was much nicer for riding behind on a skate.
Here is a super short clip of me riding behind a 04 X10 (you can see the wake) and getting my ass handed to me, lol.....I'm not good but I try.

Thanks for all the responses. Im really in a hard situation. This may be the only chance i have to get my hands on a v drive wake boat. It sounds like the wake will be fine for skating. I just dont know about surfing... |

When I've had the chance to ride behind an X-10 I've loved it. Rampy wake which for me is great for wakeskating, I wouldnt' know for wakeboarding, and I ride with no weight. Also like poptart said when you weigh it right it is fun to surf behind. |
