| After many years of riding boards on water, I still don't understand one thing. WHY do people call it a set when they go ride? A set of what? This term has never made sense to me. (I think it has something to do with slalom skiing, but I'm not sure, because I don't know the first thing about slalom skiing.) All I know is that I heard waterskiiers say it before wakeboards and wakeskates were popular. Does anybody know? |

My guess without any real research into it is that it refers to the set of down-and-backs, slalom skiers would do on the buoy straights.
i.e.
"Yes, let's go take a few sets on the straight." |

Maybe slalom skiers thought of it as a workout, similar to lifting weights. Each buoy was a "rep". So they would do one "set" of "reps" and then do more later.
But I think of it like jcoffey, a set of tricks. |

a good question.........wanna hit an evening set? like werdna said, to me this entails a sunset, a few down and backs then a switch and so on, or it could mean like getting set as in....get ready..whip, gas, rope, shoes, vest, deck, etc. how about like getting ready for a set with nadal and federer.
i dunno how far back i got it, but maybe you're right, it could've come from "hot" tuesday nights when tony klarich or my man lance walker we're getting ready to take their "set" on an espn summer night..................soooooo good!
