Thinking of getting an Iphone, my Droid was kind of cool. I like the software but it comes with a lot of bugs... anyone make the switch? What's so dope about it? _________________ The promise of heaven out of reach.

I've had an iPhone for a long time and I'm making the switch to the Samsung galaxy s2. In my opinion some of these latest android phones are better than the iphone. The android platform is so much more customizable than the iPhone which can be kind of limiting. I always loved my jail broken iPhone but the Samsung s2 is dope. |

brassmonkey, Basically this is how you choose which system is best for you. The android platform is suited for people who like to customize and also tinker around with Roms and so fourth. The IOS platform is suited for people who are not interested in a fully customize platform, which means that you will use this phone for the features it comes with.
The iPhone is somewhat customizable but nothing compared to an android system. with that said my advice is if you fall into one of these categories then that should be the system you should get.
I like my android only because I'm able to test out roms and customize how ever I want. |

I think that most people have a bias when it comes to this BUUUUUUTTTT here are some things I love about my iPhone.
I feel like the camera takes pretty awesome photos. I know it's not 100megapixels but I think the quality of the camera is just impeccable. It takes in the light really well and does not feel slow like some other phones I have seen.
I feel like a lot of the free apps are more polished feeling and you won't have to worry about getting a virus.
I used to feel like the whole iOS was more polished and ran smoother but I have seen some of the latest android phones and with most they are just as fast feeling.
I feel like androids Have much better personalization. I mean the iPhone just came out with personalized text tones (Tho you could jailbreak and do alot more)
I am done trying to just sell people on the iPhone because it really is different for anyone.
To me, the iPhone just feels good to use. But I wish it would get along with flash! Lol _________________ You had me at meat tornado. -Ron Swanson |

Like texasT said, because the iPhone and its operating system are both made by apple, the iPhone's UI is a little bit more polished, and so are most of the apps in the app store. High-end android phones are packed with powerful specs, but most of them are weighed down by twists on android's UI made by the phone companies. The Samsung GS2 seems to have a pretty clean UI, though. One huge advantage which the high-end android phones have is 4G capabilities (which, if i understand correctly, wasn't introduced with the iPhone 4S). Also, as has been mentioned, android os is far more customizable. That fact has lead to some pretty great apps that you can't really get for iOS devices (plus, i'm pretty sure more of them are free). Lastly, given the fact that there are several different devices that run android, you have a LOT of options to choose from that will have different screen sizes, cameras, UIs, and some other great features.
My synopsis is this: If you want something that is likely to run more smoothly than any other 'smartphone' in the biz, the iPhone is for you. However, if you want a whole handful of devices to choose from that will be likely do actually do more, look into comparable android phones.
This is coming from someone who uses an HTC Sensation, and used to switch between android and ios (ipod touch) several times daily. _________________ - Evan Molina |

Not to get super technical but no phone nor phone carrier has 4G technology out on the market. All of the phones who claim to have "4g" are lying and using it as a gimmick to get people in. AT&T recently approached apple about wanting to brand the iPhone 4s as a 4g platform but apple wasn't happy about lying on the specs.
Also like Samm has mentioned and slapdown reitterated, the iPhone isn't as customizable from the get go but with jailbreaking and such, the iPhone is just as customizable. And if you're that nerdy to want to customize everything, you can probably figure out how to do it with ease. Also with jailbroken phones you can get any app for free, though getting some apps through jailbreaking will be considered stealing as a lot of apps do cost money.
I have also noticed that a lot of apps make it on to both platforms, which I really like but I often have seen "coming to android market soon", meaning they are coming out for iPhone first. Now I can't even say all of the apps are like this since I'm sure some developers start developing for android first, I just haven't seen it is all.
I'm sure we all have given you too much to think about!
Everyone has done a pretty awesome job of being impartial here, which I really didn't expect! _________________ You had me at meat tornado. -Ron Swanson |

texasT, Regardless of whether or not 4G is really 4G, my phone with 4G is noticeably faster than my old one with 3G. So, maybe i'm just paying for pumped up 3G, but it's faster and I appreciate that (this statement is more or less unrelated to the ios vs. android topic)
To address jailbroken iPhones, though..
From my experiences, jailbroken iPhones can be cool. The jailbreak unlocks a lot of cool things you can do with the iPhone, but there are some drawbacks in my opinion. One is that (again, in my experiences) jailbroken iPhones lose the.. smoothness that I think is the device's strongest feature. Along with that, jailbreaking doesn't do anything to contest one of the strongest pull factors of android OS, which is the diversity in the devices. I really do like both systems and I think they each have pretty equal pros and cons, so you really can't lose. _________________ - Evan Molina |

Will the 4S do video call over 3G? My Galaxy S2 will but not sure about the new Iphone.
Also the S2 seems to be super smooth and really fast, again just like Apple has been. My wife has the 3GS and it feels clunky compared to mine.
I think it really comes down to personal choice. |

It will, over skype...
Skype is good too cause all phones can do it together.
I will admit tho, apple is sometimes stubborn with the updates. Especially with things all phones have like cut and paste. _________________ You had me at meat tornado. -Ron Swanson |

Iphones are limited, no SD drive, No usb drive... you have to run ITUNES....
My samsung android is so easy to customize, its super fast, I put in a 32gb SD card so its got ridic space for music, pics, and even a TV shows or movies
I cant imagine having the iphone because on my work computer I cant add software (like itunes) but with my android i can load a movie or show on it then later at work transfer it over with a usb cord or just pop the sd card out, and watch it on my work comp. you could never do that with an iphone. That is just one of the MANY things that an Iphone cant do. its been said above me, and ill say it again IPhones are LIMITED. there is ALOT of hype, but it will really never compare to the android system....
and plus i could NEVER not use swype for texting, i cant imagine having to click ever single letter.... terrible. |

How can you slight Apple for creating a "limited" operating system when there's people out there who can't figure out how to use a MacBook?
There are times when I wish I could plug my phone into a computer and drag/drop, but that's not often at all. Thumb drives and cloud storage are more than workable solutions, and actually provide far more functionality than a portable hard drive does. _________________ facebook.com/TheLiquidPlayground

scott a, Regardless, I'm not going to debate which is better because it's obvious that there are people who like each for different reasons. Much like any either/or situation, it's a matter of opinion, and I think it's better in these cases to help someone form their own than to push mine.
To answer your question though:
Infastructure hotspots
NFC
Flash
Blutooth 3.0
Sideloading
HTML5
Widgets
Live Wallpaper
Change your keyboard
Google 3d maps
Install apps from the web..
Maybe most or all of these aren't important to you, but they are factors that some people would consider. _________________ - Evan Molina |

I'm not looking for you (or anyone) to voice their opinion on which is better. I was just curious about what the Android could do that iPhone can't. I know there's a couple things, but you made it sound like there were a bunch...
Slapdown wrote: | Infastructure hotspots iPhone can do this via jailbreak
NFC iPhone doesn't have this, but are iPhone users missing out on much? Who is using this tech, and for what?
Flash no, I wish. Skyfire web browser kinda does enable flash though. Sorta
Blutooth 3.0 iPhone 4s uses 4.0, iPhone 4 uses 2.1
Sideloading ok, point there especially if it's via sd card
HTML5 yep
Widgets yep, via jailbreak
Live Wallpaper yep, via jailbreak
Change your keyboard yep, via jailbreak.
Google 3d maps >>> iPhone's version.
Install apps from the web.. see: sideloading | And I am actually curious if anyone is making use of NFC at this point. I like the idea a lot, it just doesn't seem to be catching on? _________________ facebook.com/TheLiquidPlayground

From what I understand it's pretty prevalent in Japan. Would like to see it hit popularity out here though. I too like the idea a lot.
Also, valid points. _________________ - Evan Molina |
