Posted: Aug 19, 2011 2:33 pm Post subject: How can I fix this rail quick? |
|
|
I live on a private lake, and this rail has been in it since I've moved on it almost a year ago. Me and my friend want to try to make it shredddable. Instead of building a new one we want to attempt to refurb this one, bc they aren't allowed in the lake (BLOWS). This one has just been there so long no one cares about it anymore i guess. We basically just want to be able to hit it with as less work as possible. Someone built it a long time ago and no one ever uses it. I'm pretty sure its bc it's way too steep. It's a lot steeper than it looks. We want to make it a little flatter or at less of a steep angle without having to try to break it down. I was thinking maybe trying to hit it with a sledge on the high side to sink it a little more hopefully without breaking it. I was also gonna try to screw a piece of AZEK on the top since the top is just straight wood. Any advice would be awesome.

You can try to pound it down so its less steep but good luck. Your best bet might be to unattach the 2 posts from the rail, cut the 2 posts down some untill its more mellow (using a battery powered skill saw would be best). then reattach the rail and screw on your trek, or builders choice, or whatever sliding material you can find to it, and shred........................

acesfull420, there's actually 3 posts (a 3rd one on the low side almost underwater). Also, the posts aren't screwed in they're nailed. I'd have to see if I could pull the nails out. What would you recommend?

pound on it with a sledge hammer.....then put a peice of 1x8 azek on top of it just make sure u sink the screws enough that your deck is not going to get caught on it. if the bottom isnt rock hard itll go down
just add screws no need to take the nails out

splitphire, yes i know there are 3 posts, the one you can't see doesnt matter. I'm willing to bet that those posts will not pound down any more especially if theve been there for a long time.

Will I be able to attempt to hammer the posts in with a sledge since the rail is on an angle? Best way to do this?

Dude in real life like when your looking at it it's crazy steep. It doesn't have a sliding surface on it either it's straight wood. I don't wanna kill myself. I think it should be at less of a steep angle and thats probably why its never been used.
Ha real life

Just went and measured it this morning. It's 10' .5" long and 6" wide.

Should I use Azek or Trex, and what should I cut it to? Like how much over hang should be over the end of the wood?

use whatever is cheapest, and you dont have to hang any of it over the end.

I found some very thin white composite stuff at lowes, some of it was damaged because it is so flimsy. They sell the cull stuff for 7 bucks 4x8 sheet. It is textured a little on one side and smooth o the other. Reminds me of Rv shower walls. I gorilla glued it and it has worked great.
