Harbor freight has two engines I am consider to buy for a winch. 6.5 hp is $119 and 11 hp is $299. Will the 11 hp engine give me a more consistent pull(along with the torque converter)? If I set up a 6.5 hp engine with a 54 tooth sprocket how fast do you think the engine could tow me. Also will the 11 hp engine last longer and be more dependable than the 6.5 hp engine? I'm 120 pounds right now but I will grow over the next couple of years.
I've put 5 dollars of gas in mine for basically a whole summer. They burn very little. The smoothness of pull relies largely on how symmetrical you make your spool. Again get the 11. Even at 120 lbs you'll want the 11. You'll have to modify the 6.5 I'd guess, more work, louder...
I'm 165 lb. and my 6.5hp with a torque converter deep water starts me fine. I think the sprocket on my spool is somewhere around 60. That being said, if you're not worried about the price get the big one.
