So it's finally finished..
After much £££ and forum reading it's more or less done, so I thought I'd add to the knowledge and say thanks by giving a few hints and tips on the build.
My spec:
8hp rip off Loncin
tav2
72t/12t #35 sprocket
6.5" ID 360mm OD Aluminium spool
200m+ 4mm spectra
I'm in the UK, and most of the parts are a shizzle to find. I bought the general kart bits off ebay, but the majority of the bits came from MFGsupply in the US. The motor from ukpumps, and the frame was CAD'd by me and sent off to be built.
First off, the frame. I guessed on minimal weight, but enough so I can put a cover on the top and the sides for soundproofing and safety. it's 30mm box. This had 50mm slots drilled in it for the engine to mount, but nothing else as I didnt really trust my guesstimates. Annoyingly, the bottom was offset but built the wrong way round, so it's slightly off.
So next, the TAV. Bit of a beach tbh. It was the right size (for the 8hp Loncin, it's a 1" shaft btw), but the bolt holes didn't line up. I heard a few guys rewelded and redrilled these. Didn't find the need - just drilled another hole and filed it into a slot:
Next prob with it, the tav doesn't fit on - as everyone, we grinded a fin off the mount. Next, the driver plate stuck out too much. I chopped the spacer washer with a hacksaw, and seems to line up now. Finally, the last thing, the tav bolt supplied doesn't fit - it's some weird imperial thing. Got hold of one from my local bolt shop (clerkenwell screws london - awesome).
Next, drilling. Ok, but need a pretty hardcore drill for M16 bolts. Really upset the neighbours with this one. Guestimated like below...
So spool. I got two bits of 5mm alu cut, with an axle hole. made up with M12 rod, and 15mm alu tube for the inner. fastened with nylocs. It's fastened to the axle with a brake carrier, thinking of drilling a pin through this, depending on how difficult it is to pull out.
All on, I painted with some boring grey hammerite, stuck some wheels on it etc. It needs the sides and the top/splash guard doing, but I'll do that when its all tested, and paint it a better colour. Heres the nearly finished product:
So we're prob gonna test next weekend, but we're not sure on decent places around london yet (I'm E1). Shout if you've got any ideas or you want to come ride (I need a lift, or share a hire car).
Cheers

nice job on the winch m8, cant beat a homemade pull !
london is surrounded with waterways and rivers, all you need is a clear bit of water to test it.
use google earth then to find some drops and weirs and better places to ride.
the uk must have a good number of winches now |

evening
So it's middle of the icy British winter here, and about time I sorted the winch out. We used it a few times last year, but with varying success. First time, out on the river, things looked fine - dock starts were fast and easy on a skim. Second go in a lake though was bad.. the engine bogged down and just wouldn't pop us out of the water.
So I'm after a bit of help - it's got a big engine, and a tav, and I at least thought that my ratios were right. The only things I guessed it could be are that the engine wasn't run in for too long, or the TAV any advice gratefully received, I'M GUTTED!
cheers

jared, Does the engine sound like it's bogging down and having trouble pulling you through the water even if you're not getting up? You might just be geared slightly too slow to get popped out of the water (i'm guessing that your second test was deep-water starting?). Your engine should be plenty powerful. I'm over 200lbs and mine will deep-water start me no problem.
You might also try playing with the spool size, maybe a slightly bigger one will help? (it's been a while since I worked out the gearing on mine so I kind of forget what effects what ) |

Hi GnarShredd
When we dock start, everything's fine - it's fast enough, and half throttle will do when you're up on the water.
Deep water starts definitely sound like the engine is bogging down. It pulls you through the water, but doesn't seem to have enough power to pop you out of it.. the engine just doesn't seem to get up to speed, and sounds like its struggling.
I found this http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?p=19866 on google, and wondered if tweaking the TAV was the way to go, maybe the engine isn't getting up to speed quick enough?
I thought I'd got fairly standard spool and gears sizes - are yours different?
cheers

You might be able to adjust the TAV but I haven't really messed around with that at all myself, so wouldn't know where to begin.
I had a similar problem when tuning my winch, was fast enough to pull me from deepwater on a wakeboard but not deepwater on a wakeskate. For me there was a VERY fine line between those two things. It looks like your gearing is ok but from my experience, every motor is just a bit different.
Have you adjusted the motor at all? I ended up tuning the throttle a bit to give me just a little bit more juice and after some fiddling, got dialed perfectly. |

I played with the TAV settings and adjusted it from the first hole to the second hole. it didn't seem to make much of a difference. I think, in the end it all comes down to gearing. when i winch with my lighter friends we put on a smaller sprocket and my heavy ones we put on a bigger. but i'll use a 60 tooth for light guys and a 66 for heavy. it slows it down a little but it practically tears peoples arms off getting out of the water.
i also put a bigger carb and a performance air filter on my honda motor and removed the governor. Taking the governor out made a HUGE difference. we could go with a bigger sprocket and get plenty of speed. the bigger carb didn't really do much except make it look cool.
