| Looking at some options for riding this summer and I think i want to get a jon boat. just had a couple quick questions. I want to get the jon boat as short as possible so i can just throw it in my truck bed to travel around with it. What is the smallest you could use? And also, I was given a free 20 hp motor.. will that be strong enough? thanks. |

I've been wondering about that too. I just got a 25HP motor for cheap. I've been looking at the 14' jon boats on craigslist, but does it have to be a "wide" jon boat? can i get away with a 12'. Also, the motor i got was cheap, but also a 20" shaft. will that still work? _________________

| Think about how much work its gonna be to lug all that crap around. Get a trailer. Boat, motor, fuel cell all are pretty heavy and would be a pain to constantly move around. Hook un hook all that crap each time. |

you could totally make an outboard motor winch. they are all geared about 2:1 and a 20hp probably runs about 5000 rpm max - so you'd want a small spool. 2" spool you would go...
2in*3.1415/12*5000*60/5280 == 30 mph. It'd be a little tough to drag around but 20HP ought to give you plenty of torque. (I would cr*p my pants laughing if i ever saw an outboard motor winch, but now that i think about it, it would be awfully easy to do!) _________________

Ive rode on a 10hp zodiac
but some people have trouble getting up on my 45hp, on my whaler... really depends on the weight of yourself, your friends, and your boat. |
