I just wanted to see how many users we have here. I have a few interested peeps here at work for some side projects and trying to gather information for where these side project will lead.
So do you have an Android phone (G1, myTouch, Droid, ...ect.)? _________________ http://trihawk.fotki.com

As tempting as it is, I haven't made the jump yet. I just haven't found hardware with Android that I like and developer support isn't quite to the level I'd like it to be.
My next phone will likely be an android device though, now I just have to wait 2 years for my contract to be up... |

Got a G1 when they were new. Pretty sick. I like the way new android phones are heading. Although to be honest i can't see them being much competition for the iPhone, they are on different networks and offer some interesting things that the iphone doesn't. I still had my G1 up until last weekend when i accidentally ran over it it's insured but will take a little while to get replaced. _________________ - Evan Molina |

dscsk8er55, I think right now the majority of developers really only see the iPhone as a place to put a lot of work in to building apps. While apps (or at least their concepts) often hit Android first (AND FOR FREE!!!), to me they just seem like they could use a bit more polish before people are willing to throw down their cash for it when compared to the later introduced but more complete iPhone counterpart (take the more recent iPhone augmented reality apps. They've been on android almost since day 1).
If nothing else, unfortuantely the iPhone market is WAY bigger and everyone wants a piece of that pie. With that though comes a lot of crappy apps just trying to get people's money, so it's really a toss-up for the customer in the end I guess.
Plain and simple, a lot of the developers out there need to pay their bills, and the iPhone store, while over-saturated, is their best means right now. Android allows for so much more than the iPhone does but it's not feeling the huge influx of apps to really flex its muscle yet.
Now would probably be a good time to hop in to the Android game though. There's gonna be so much Android stuff announced at CTIA I bet.

GnarShredd, I agree 100%, plus IPhones are just so trendy now-a-days. Most people/kids wouldnt even know the difference between an android phone or any other of those smart phones out there. Everyone has played with an Iphone or owned an Ipod touch so people wnat to buy an Iphone because they are semi familiar with them and could use it with ease and little difficulty if they did purchase it. No1 i know even owns an android, besides ONE person and he LOVES it, and when i played with i really enjoyed it but i have no use for one of those smart phones for now. I dont even have text messaging. |

Well I was hoping that there would be more people that like the android platform but oh well.
The IPhone can suck it!!! I hate that thing with a passion. I was on IPhone game project for about a month and then quit b/c it was a PAIN to do anything. First off you have to have a mac to develop on and I really don't like the fact that I have to pay for OVERPRICED hardware just to run their software. I did eventually get a version running on my windows box but it took a week of late nights to accomplish it. The next hurdle is that there is one IDE and that is it. Even on windows I can develop in a ton of different IDEs. And by then I think i was so fed up with the experience that I just really didn't want to learn a whole new language (objective c) on top of the rest of the crap.
I was doing the development to learn and not for money. I think that is why I am going back to Andriod. I already know java (it is very similar to c++) and I can do it EASILY on my windows or linux machine. The only real thing I am going to have to learn is OpenGL but i was going to have to do that on the IPhone too.
Sorry for the rant but I am an apple hater and I think I always will be. _________________ http://trihawk.fotki.com

dscsk8er55, I agree for the most part. While I understand different computers work well for different uses, in general, Macs to me are computers for people who don't know how to use computers. Very user friendly and (debatably) hard to mess-up. I stand by windows machines as well.
That said though, I went to the dark-side and got myself an iPhone recently, but only beacuse it FINALLY reached where it needed to be with the 3gs (gmail/google calendar synching, compass, decent speed)
Sidenote: How hard is it to learn to develop without any schooling in the subject? I always wanted to mess around with C# to make myself some simple home-brew xbox360 games. I know it takes hours and hours to learn but just thought it would be a neat hobby to wind-down after work or on rainy days. |
