A lot of you are probably too young, but I know there are a couple people who are old enough to remember what it was like before the internet blew up... before myspace and facebook, message forums and online magazines, shizzle, even before cell phones got popular. Crazy it wasn't too long ago. Back when people socialized by going out and physically meeting and talking with people/ playing with neighborhood kids instead of entertaining themselves online. I think that's why I welcome hurricanes so much.. because normally afterwards there is no power for a while and it forces you to behave like when you were a kid... go outside for entertainment.
I miss playing outside til dark every night! And I especially miss having a giant treehouse in my backyard to sleep in.
What do you reminisce about? _________________ chance favors the prepared mind |

I totally remember all of that. Those were some good times. When you mentioned playing outside 'till dark I remember backyard football, NERF battles, my treehouse, just cruising on my bike with friends (and building ramps out of whatever we could find, even if it was only like 6 in. tall)...
damn, I feel old now and I'm only 22! |

Gnarshredd, I remember almost all of that! Biking was the big thing for my 'hood crew. When the boys weren't out, my sister, and I would grab these crappy skateboards we had (I'm talking oldschool kmart crap with terrible bearings) and would run up to this one house that had a sweet downslope toward our house and we'd ride down over and over.
Also used to play rollerblade garage hockey lol, basketball etc. When we got older like young teenagers, we were on the lake every summer.. not playing in the yard quite as much but most importantly we were outside doing stuff and hanging out, not sitting on a computer wasting away.
I think this is why I like hurricanes so much... afterwards we almost always don't have power and it's a fun experience to see what it's like to have a totally silent house, and be forced to go outside for fun or play board games etc like in the good ol' days _________________ chance favors the prepared mind |

taku, I still play board games all the time! Scrabble/Monopoly, all the good stuff. My girlfriend recently introduced me to Yahtzee and it's awesome, haha.
Not a lot of my friends were super in to the internet (me being one of the most addicted but I could only stay on for a couple hours or so tops and a lot of that time was spent on here) so I pretty much spent most of my time outside my house doing stuff. We all played on soccer teams together growing up so we'd just hit up the park and get a game going, sometimes ultimate frisbee or something. Looking back, I had a really cool group of kids I hung out with in high school, we were all pretty social because being from a small town, you kind of have to be friends with everyone.
I wouldn't worry about internet taking over people's lives though. I really think that social netoworking is going to come full-circle though and eventually get everyone to start hanging out together again. Once people become comfortable with 'meeting' friends online and it's accepted by the majority, people are going to want to meet and hang out in real life to do things that they have in common. In the end the internet is the best tool people have to meet others and exchange information or discuss common interests. I mean, how many people on these boards alone have met up and ridden together? That number can only go up from here. |

Ahh, growing up without any cell phones or laptops. Those were the days when you were not at home and you missed your friends phone call and a member of your family would take a message for you. If no one was home you had no idea that anyone called. I remeber busy tones, getting upset because your friend was on the phone forever.
Now its on your hip, like a leash or even life support. What would we do if we missed a call or voice mail? Sorry, cell phones are a pain in the arse. Remember when you had to write down a phone # or use your brain to memorize it? Amazing isn't it.
I do try and stay outside until dark. Whether I am skateing or working in the yard. Being inside isn't enjoying much. I like to drive over to the lake and just watch and look around, 2 weeks ago I met a nice guy there and we chatted for about an hour or so. You can't do that behind a computer. You can meet plenty of people on them, thats for sure.
We played frisbee, street football - 2- hand touch, Went to the park and played 500 on the ball feild. Played baseball in the summer leagues, and yes, I had to ride my schwinn to the park because mom and dad were at work or just couldn't give me a ride. I have a brother and 2 sisters. we are very close in age and it did make it difficult to get us kids to where we wanted to be. Being outside and messing around with the neighborhood kids was always a good time. I am in my mid 40's and I still would rather be outside, behind my boat doing what I enjoy. Just like a kid, because I refuse to grow up or get old.
Laptops along with the internet is the all time greatest invention ever. It's the worlds largest library. If its raining, snowing or just a blah day you can always go surfing. You can get info on anything, meet people, chat, buy stuff, whatever it is you want to do with it. I like the internet tool better then T.V. myself. I can't imagine what life would be like today if we had it back then. _________________ In just two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday. |

TWG, isn't it fun to tell your parents what you did do as a kid? They always say, you didn't do those things. Yes, yes we did. They never had a clue that we were on the phone while they were sleeping.
It's not that we were doing anything wrong, we just didn't want them to know because they would say something about it. A daily dose of being good was better then getting the belt across your butt. Those were the days when respect was a given.
My family is rather close, even though we live many miles apart. When we all get together, we reminise about old times and the things we did as kids, its a hoot. Mom and Dad just shake thier heads. _________________ In just two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday. |

in 1995 we got a computer, and it was a big deal. We played computer games that ran from DOS, and the internet consisted of dialing up to AOL.
Good times.
I would absolutely die today w/o it, seeing as the internet is my life. |

I think like the end of middle school is when i we first got internet... but it was only 56k.. SO slow... AOL style... hahah Dont remember doing much but talking to people on AIM and playing dumb games.... didnt really do it often, rather be out side biking and go-pedding! Skateboarding was huge too for my neighbors and friends at the time... loved it.
Taku, deff love hurricanes, we didnt have power at my house for nearly a month after one, and we even had to go to school! cold showers ftw. i got so used to them i still take them haa. |
