is there any reason for a larger outer diamater for the spool besides to be able to hold more rope? I know the inner diameter has a direct effect on torque/speed, but i was hoping to make as compact a winch as possible and when looking at spools for ideas, I see a lot of 15 in diamater and that seems kind of crazy if your only going to have 600-1000 feet of rope. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Also stops the line going over the side walls and then wrapping around bits you don't want it to be!

bigger spool = less speed increase
thinner rope = less speed increase

if you have 1/8 rope and start a run at 19 mph and you rewinde 5 revolutions of rope you will have a speed of 19,9 with a 8 in spool, and 20,17 with 6 in spool if you have same rpm.

its not that big difference.

its the revolutins the maks speed increase

in real speed will vary becauce the rope will jump between different revolution levels

If its a miniwinch your after
with 600ft roop, I would build 4½ in inner and 10 in outer and go for a little more widht, something like 12 in width and with a guide width of 2-3 in
