I want to stir stuff up too! Here's my opinion, I think women's wakeskating (not in general just on a "professional" level) makes wakeskating look bad. I don't think there is a girl out there who deserves to represent a company. Just because guys have it doesn't mean you deserve it. The market for women's wakeskating products is so small that I don't see where a company could benefit from it. The so called "professional" women wakeskaters are progressing so slow and part of the reason may be because they are so worried about getting free stuff. Sorry if I come off as sexist but I just hate to see women's wakeskating on TV and how ridiculous it makes wakeskating look. Just because you show up for a contest where two or three other girls ride and happen to ride better than one or two of them doesn't mean you deserve anything. I would really like to hear the other side and be convinced that the "professional" female wakeskaters out there really deserve what they have/want.

i dont want to give them credit just because they are doing something. why not give them credit when they actually deserve it instead of a pity freebie because they are trying? |

lol so true....
and i agree this may be a touchy subject. i dont think there are any female pro's that can live off of wakeskate earnings and i just cant see that side of the sport getting big enough to where they could anytime soon... |

Mr. Top Hat, This just makes it seem like everyone thinks there incapable of doing anything.... Getting up on a wakeskate is a feet for a lot of guys, so if girls can do shuv its and averything else, i dont see why they dont deserve it. |

I'm all for girls wakeskating. And I can't stress that enough. And there are a few girl wakeskaters that are starting to step it up. But, as of now, girl wakeskaters overall are so far behind guys it's not even funny. And because they have a vag and can bigspin, they get sponsored when there are literally hundreds of guy wakeskaters that deserve it way more. I think there's a HUGE double standard in wakeskating. _________________ I like to choke when my team needs me the most, no Romo. |

You guys do realize that they arent getting sponsored for the tricks they do right? they are getting hooked up because there is a demographic for womens boards/clothes and what not.
Just because a girl cant ride like the guys doesnt mean she does not deserve recognition for showing up to events and promoting the sport to other girls. Just like you guys look up to some of the big names and the tricks they are doing, there are females doing the same thing with their favorite riders |

if they are consistent under pressure, aka at competitions, then they deserve it. if they are busting out kickflips, v-flips, ya know whatever....then i can honestly say, right now anyways, i give those females props. BUT i dont know really know any chick out there that can do these things. _________________ Peace through firepower!! |

i agree to a point.
but i think this comes from there being no distinct AM or PRO sponsorships/contest. It seems anyone can call themselves pro.
Board companies need to follow the skateboard companies with how they formally bump AMs to Pro by releasing a Pro Model deck.
But womens wakeskating seems to be a race for sponsorships and attention. every "pro" girl has their own website about their self and they have a bunch of sponsors. the girls seem to have the same tricks and even ride the same.
they need to focus more on riding and pushing their ability instead of marketing themselves. there is no reason they cant one day reach the level of the guys tricks. |

I think wakeskating is too small in general for any company to formally bump an "am" up to pro status. The talent is a lot deeper in skateboarding than wakeskating, and there are riders who were never really "am" and went straight to having a pro model. So are the ways of a board sport in its infancy.
I think this is a pretty tricky subject. I like what Russian said because it's pretty accurate. While I don't personally look to any other female riders for inspiration (and just never really have), there are girl riders who want or need other girl riders to look up to. Going to a Maven session really helped me see this...and not only do some girls want other girl role models, but the "pro" riders are also there promoting their art form and growing it in general. Realistically, there are very few lady riders who are really getting hooked up.
And while I'm probably the least feminist-ish (what???) rider you will ever meet, I think the lady wakeskaters (or "pro" lady wakeskaters) have it hard, based on what was said here. Either they're progressing too slow and they're lame, or they're really trying to progress and learn new stuff and as a result, the style can suffer, and then their progress STILL looks bad for wakeskating.
In the end, sometimes I think about women's wakeboarding back in like the late 90s and how girls could get sponsored for doing back rolls. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

1. I have never been a girl, and I don't plan on becoming one. All the guys talking, we have never been female! It might be lugitly more difficult to wakeskate as a girl than as a guy.
2. That being said, I know unsponsered guys who could kick the crap out of ANY pro girl. (EJ, Jake R., blah, blah, blah) Should that happen? If we are talking total equality, then no. The best riders should get sponsered, not taking into account gender, race, or any manner of other things.
3. My opinion is that girls are trying. I've seen chicks at odub thowing sick stuff, and falling decently hard too. Check this out, Jen knows how to take a hit and keep going.

Did she go for the rail the second time to try and get "more free stuff?" I don't think so. I think she was trying to progress her riding, despite some serious wreckage that would have left most of us guys saying "I'm done for the day."
