Well ive been thinking about making a deck, just for fun and to mess around with to see what i could come up with.
Who has pics of there un gripped wood concaves, were you can actually see the layers and whatnot? I want to try a few ideas, but want to see some close ups on how Production models are made and see how i would have to sand, trim, layer and all the rest!
Anyone with other ideas, Id love to hear them to see what i can work with!

mr.foonis, Thanks I meant to search for gator, but couldnt find any big pics, and it was like 3 in the mornin.
Are all the wood lines(Dont know what to call them) maybe layers? Are they seperate and built up n that board, or is it routered or milled out?
Rugrat, Yeah ive already read that whole post! But thanks. I might re-read oit to see what i might have missed!

yeah i think so, but if i were you i would use less than that since they probably used really thin veneers and you are probably going to end up with something around 1/8 inch

Layers or ply's i believe work fine. I think they are normally called ply's.

Rugrat, Yeah i new that just had a brain shlt!
mr.foonis, Yeah I looked on gator.com and it says it has 19 plys, so thats for sure.
Were would be a good place to get good birch/similar thats fairly cheep, but will last. I know lowes and Home Depot have cheeper stuff, but I have heard its just shlt! Anywere in SoCal?

Alright i think i know what i want to do if I make this board.
Some were around 41-42in long
1.5-2in 3 stage rocker/ 12-15in of flat
About 2in. of Kicktail and about the same for Concave
Havent decided width, but prolly just average
Probably use 4-5plys of 1/8in birch and maybe 1 Hard maple, just a little thicker, in the middle! Then add the cancaves, and at 1/8in, it would be like 6-7 plys per inch(Including glue) so ill do like 10-15 plays that are sanded to make the concave and kicktails, which would be like 14-21 plys total..... Idk if that sounds rite. that would put the total thickness at like 2in. and witht the rocker, it would be like 4in(Top of Kicktail) off the ground when its sitting on the ground, which seems to be close to what my 2.0 is so it seems to be close. I know with glue, seallant and weather or not i glass it(?just the bottom and top or both?) but i probably wont, and with would expanding and contracting and whatnot, I should be pretty good.
Any ideas or major design flaws? Should I try to add the maple, and if so what thickness should it be? Should i try to glass it? If so, what is the benefit to just sealing it really good with marine grade sealer? What glue should I use? I most likely will use a 2 part epoxy, but whats really good and water resistant of some sort. What other glues would be good?
I have not really worked out a price, scense im not home rite now, but I read something were a 4x8 ft 1/8 in birch is like $38 a sheet, and i would expect maple to be the same or a little more. So if i got one sheet of birch and a smaller one of maple, i think it would be like $50-70 depending on prices and stuff. Then add in the epoxy, sealant, paint, grip tape, and other various things, It should be between $100-150ish... I hope! I could take out the maple and that 4x8 sheet should be sufficent enough for the maple ply taken out, and It would be a little cheeper!
Sorry for the long post and all of the rambling but i just want to seee what you all think of it. Think it would be good to start making them while im young(14) and then it could grow into something after time!

one time i built a skate and i used 4 plys of the 1/8th inch stuff and then 4 more cut peices for the concave and kick. TRUST ME cut the peices for the concave, it will be impossible to sand the concave into it if you dont

mr.foonis, What do you mean? I was planning on cutting each one (one for each side) at different lengths, spacing a certain amount, and make stairs. I didnt say that in the post though.
How did just 8plys hold up? Pics? Yeah that many plys might be a bit much.... maybe like 5-8 plys for concave and kick??

oh yeah thats pretty much what i meant. 8 plys actually went pretty well. but make sure you space them evenly and sqarely on the board cause i screwed them up and it made the board look lopsided.
what are you going to do about finishing it?

mr.foonis, Yeah its gonna be hard to make everything straight! But ill work it out. Do you still have the board? What did you use to "finish" it?
What do you mean finishing it? Like staining the wood or painting?
I would like to paint a nice simple design on it and call it good, but i might just stain it or whatever its called and run it like that? Idk it will be a while before I can even start, and i dont even know if ill be alowed to(Damn strick parent) but if i am i also nee to make a little money or see what the parents will do for that!

i would reccomend putting on whatever design you want to and then coating it with epoxy, its pretty much indestructable after that. if i still have them ill put up some pictures of my build

mr.foonis, Alright sounds good. Is that what you did? How were the kicktails and the concave with just 4 1/8in? What could you compare it to?

honestly not like anything else ive ever ridden, it all depends on how you do it you can make it however many plys you want if you want it high and steep of low and mellow you can choose. i just epoxy'd that board with no graphic. it was fun all in all though

just a quick little bit of advice with veneer...
you should always balance your plys by cross laminating them...
0- 90 ... and alway use odd numbers 3,5,7,9ply... etc...
... reason being the wood will pull and warp as the glue drys so you want the top grain to match the bottom grain ...
example for a 5 ply
:::::::::::::
top veneer grain is north/south,
next veneer grain is east/west,
North/south,
east/west,
bottom veneer north/south
