i was wondering how people cut out the walls of their spool so cleanly and how they find the center/where to put the bolts
we were going to use a tractor rim, but maybe just making one out of metal would be easier/better? _________________ http://www.stickandflick.com

I used cut-off blades you can buy at any hardware store. . . . . they come with practically any width and set axle holes. . . . . only problem is that they can cut your rope cuz their edges are rough. . . . . . but you dont have to do any work on them _________________ Losers say that they'll try.............winners go home and F^&k the prom queen. |

a lot of spools use cutting discs with good results,
we used 2 kart brake discs which are plenty strong enough and not
too expensive either, plus they're easy to mount to an axle
because thats what they're designed to do... _________________ I love riding boards like a fat kid loves cake.

can someone look at the steel disc brake rotors on this page and tell me if the will work for spool walls. i think they would be perfect cuz the hub is built in. If so, what size is good 8 or 10?

Hmm...interesting. I bet that would work.
I guess you could drill your holes and mount it up and bam, You got yourself a spool. _________________ Aaron |

acesfull420, i would think you'd have to go with the 10, but what about having to keyway each side on the axel... _________________ north jones |

| seems like a no brainer but i am not experienced with winches. I figure you just drill holes for the threaded bolts with steel sleeves over them (like in other posts) and you should be good to go. Can anyone tell me if the 10" discs would be the way to go? If so, what should the inside diameter be? 6"? And should i make it 6" wide also. I will be using a 6.5 knock off motor from harbor freight and a tav 2. |

| I am not sure what you mean fastgreens. If you use split rims like others do, don't you have to keyway each side also? |

acesfull420, that's how they connect to the axel... its the little notch in the top of the hub... it can probably be rigged up somehow _________________ north jones |

acesfull420, That should work. All you need is the keyed axle, some key stock or a 1/4'' key from lowes, and mount it all up.
You could get by with the 10'' rotors and easily a 6'' diameter for the spool. And even an 8'' diameter if your planning on using 7/64 amsteel. _________________ Aaron |

Sure is. Def isn't somethin I would do, but it seems it would be a quick and easy way to have a sufficient spool. _________________ Aaron |

| so what would be cheaper? the split rim and cutting discs for sides method? I just don't like the fact that the discs could wear on the rope a little. I actually work at a place where i can get some of these items at cost (almost half price), but I am not sure if they have this specific item. If anyone has other suggestions that has built one themselves, please let me know. |

what about a spool for an air hose? would that work?
a plastic garden hose spool would be pretty cheap... it might work if you had a heavy duty one... _________________ north jones |

| you know what you could do about the cutting disks if your afraid of wearing out your rope is get a spray on plastic or rubber like plastidip or something similar and just coat them with it. ive used plastidip before and the result is a smooth soft surface, alot like the handles on most pliers, and is pretty durable |
