But really, anything that does work, and generally with a horizontal shaft and these days 6.5hp is the defacto.

Horrell's was like 3.5hp or something, but i guess it would not deep water start. Then it depends what your going to do with your winch as to what the minimum would be. An all round winch would have a 6.5hp engine or more, thats what i think anyway...

oh ok i didnt see the wording there. im looking for the non-deepwater starting very simple and cost effective solution

You will want a 6.5 and you would love deep water starts! I learned that if your gona build one go all the way.

Get this its cheap and is a 6.5! it has never failed me.

i would not go above a 9hp. do yourself a favor and get something a honda 8 or 8.5hp. whatever they are this year.

6.5, but i woulldn't waste my time with something under 8.5, they just pull better.

well me and my buddy got pulls in with a 5hp B&S easily. no deep water. But we upgraded to a 11HP Techumsah motor and got it for $100. But 5 was enough for us
