So Im back home from school for the summer and I want to finish my winch. . . . I thought I had it mostly completed last summer but my friends and I had some problems when we tried to run it
so here are my problems and my opinion of why they are occuring:
1) the winch can deepwater start very well but it doesnt have a high speed, tops out around 15 mph. I have a 6.5 briggs & stratton with a TAV. My gear on the spool is a #41 60tooth, 9.5'' diameter-----I think I need a smaller spool to increase the rpm
2) the rope on my spool tangles like a mo fo. the spool is about 10'' in width (which I think is too wide) with a roller fairlead in front. I think my spool is too wide and my fairlead is too close to the spool, which causes the rope to stack up in the center and tangle. my dad believes I dont need the fairlead, he believes the rope can just wind up on a bard spool, I disagreed
. . . . . my descriptions are pretty bad, but if anyone can help me I can give more detailed explanations. thanks

you need to go with a 7.5" spool width and and try an 8" inner diamter as well.

i have kind of the same set up and we have 800' of bulletline cause the 1000' would do the same thing. try taking some of the line off and then unspool all the line and put it on real tight. worked for me.

what could be the problem with the speed? . . . . . . I still do not know what makes it lack high speed. . . . . . I thought 6.5hp + TAV should do the trick

the entire spool size makes a difference, not just the gears. i would suggest building yours to the bullet lines spool dimensions. you don't nessecarily need an adjustable inner, but it's nice. check it out at bulletlines.com with your engine and gears i would suggest a 8" inner. the lower the inner the more torque and vice versa. also consider a stage 1 mod kit for it. i have one. it's a 6.5 honda w/ a tav2, 54t sprocket(could be 56) and a 6" inner diameter and mine deep water starts easy and will top out around 25 or probly 35 if i tried it.

mr. Blonde, i would try to get a 7 or 8 horse power, but if you cant try to make the sprocket a little bigger.
