The split is common in wakeskating. Sometimes it can really get you and other times you can get through it without getting injured, if you are lucky. At any rate, doing a split at 20+ mph can't be good for your health.

Some of you may recall from last season, I did a split that stretched out my MCL enough to cause me to miss about two months of riding. Well, it has happened again, and I think this time I will be out for a while.

Wednesday afternoon, I went riding with a friend that I ride with quite a bit and my wife. I was riding like total garbage and wasn't happy with the way I was doing 3 shuvs. So I decided to work on them to see if I could figure out what I was doing wrong. I had already been riding for a while and I knew I should have gotten in the boat, but I soon realized what I was doing on my 3 shuvs and wanted to make sure I had it all figured out. As usual, that one more try came back to bite me on the butt.

I did a 3 shuv and when I landed, my back foot slipped off the board and my front foot stayed on causing me to do a split. My front foot was pointed towards the boat, so when I did the split, my hamstring took the beating this time instead of my knee. As soon as it happened, I knew I was in for it. I could hear it.

The worst part was when I was getting back in the boat. I don't know if it was from the pain or what, but I could not catch my breath and my stomach was very nauseated. I was trying to puke, but nothing would come up. It was the worst feeling I have ever had in my entire life. I told them that I felt like I was going to pass out........

I then lifted my head up and looked up at my wife who looked like she just saw a ghost. I felt like I just woke up from the best night sleep that I have had in years and I felt a million times better. They said I was out for about 10 seconds, but it felt like hours to me.

I went to the doctor yesterday and luckily nothing is torn, but he said it will take quite some time for my hamstring to heal because it is such a large muscle. Basically, it was stretched out a good bit and with tears in some fibers but no tears in the actual muscle. So it looks like I will probably be out for the rest of this season. I'll see how it goes, but I'm not rushing anything. I want to make sure the muscle heals completely before I put a strain on it.

I guess it could have been a lot worse if I would have torn into the muscle, so I feel lucky in a sense. But it always sucks to get injured, especially when you are not 16 anymore.

So there it is, The Split - volume 2.

I'm really sorry to hear that dave. The splits always lurk in the back of my mind...I've been trying to increase my flexibility as a result of that, but I basically tell myself that it won't happen.

dave- if it makes you feel better, i hurt myself too.

i was wakeskating on july 3rd and fell in shallow water, and snapped my arm on a rock just below the surface. i got pins that they took out, but i had a cast for 7 weeks.

i finally got it off on august 23. i was skateboarding on the 27th, and fell. it snapped again soo easy. i watched it, like a breadstick.

i got a metal plate and some screws the next day (last sat.) and have been sitting on my couch until now.

Dave Barousse, damn Dave. Sorry to hear that happened. i hope that it all heals well.

heywood, i know how that goes, not quite as severe but i broke my hand in gymnastics, and then like a week after i got that cast off, i was doing a back handspring and my radius just broke, so i was out for like.....i don't remember, but a long time, so i missed that whole season of gymnastics. good thing it was in the winter though cause then i didn't miss much boarding.

Thanks for the support guys. The back of my leg is black. If I can get a pic of it without showing too much of my butt, I'll post a pic.

heywood, that sounds painful! I hope everything works out. It is odd to hear about someone breaking their arm wakeskating.

Here is that pic I said I would post. The pic is showing the back of my right leg. It doesn't show all of the injury, but it does show a good bit of it. Don't you wish your leg was mulitcolored??

Shocked ..... Whoa. I've done the splits and turned purple... Not Black!
Get better Dave, and wear long pants. Very Happy

There are a few other things that I always do to cause injury. I knee myself in the face alot, it will give you a black eye. You also have to look out for kicking yourself in the back of the head, happened 4 times.
