So I have a super old briggs and Stratton engine and is talking a poop, it is from like the early 80s. It is a 7 hp and it is getting old and not running great. So i am going to get a new engine. I can get a new 8 hp briggs for a good price, but i am not sure if it is the right decision. I dont want to get a knock off. Are hondas worth the extra $.
What do you think. _________________ l_o/------------------------<l |

I work at an auto parts store and work on small engines.
briggs are good motors but the older ones were build better in my opinion (the over head valve system is more prone to come out of adjustment than the old flat head style valve system). parts are going to be easier to get and cheaper than honda. but if you take care of the briggs you shouldn't have any problems, regular oil changes, new spark plug and filters go a long way.
honda must be doing something right because there are very few that are brought in for work. just try to stay away from the overhead cam (OHC) series of motors because the cam gear is made from plastic and breaks, meaning you need to split the crankcase open to fix it and that is a pain in the neck. |
