what camera are you interested in buying....?

the internet is a great source of tutorials and descriptions on how to use your camera.

but its all about experimenting... messing with it first hand, you are your best teacher.

just play with it and have fun.

The absolute truth!! just mess around with different lighting, camera settings, backgrounds....etc. and you will start to learn a lot the more you shoot. so get out there and have fun!!

I am not going to disagree with that but I will say that there are some rules that help a beginner out. First off if you want to sharp picture you need to be in focus.
There are usually two auto focusing settings, one shot and AF servo. In one shot when you hold down the button to take a picure it will grab focus on your subject and stay there. This is good for everyday shooting but not for sport because most likely your subject will be riding towards you or away from you. If you put it in AF servo the camera will track the focusing with your subject.

second thing you need to do for sharp pictures is know shutter speed. No matter what you do never drop below 1/500th of a second if you want a sharp action photo.

during a sunny day, try shooting at f5.6 1/500th iso 100, This might be a little over exposed and if it is drop your shutter to 1/800th or so.

As far as equipment goes you have a lot of choices. I shoot canon gear and refuse to switch although I work with a lot of pro's in south Florida who are. in general I would suggest and older pro-sumer body from canon like the 20d, 30d, or 40d. These will run you 350, 475, and 675 on the used market. Try to get a battery grip, it makes you life a lot easier shooting all day. If you were to pick up a Nikon I would suggest the d300, it is pricey but amazing, the older Nikons arent worth it. Stay away from cheap lenses, i know they look appealing but wont give you a great picture. For shooting from a boat or from shore I would suggest the 70-200mm f4 or f2.8 from canon. It is L glass there best, and the focusing is wicked fast. If you have to buy third party glass go with sigma, they make great lenses like the 18-50mm f2.8.

However as said before you need to experiment yourself. This is just the way I was taught and isnt necessarily the best method. Oh also if you dont care too much about MP take a look at a canon 1d. 8fps is amazing for wakeskating.

Good luck.

I have D40, it's a decent price, and is really easy to use.

I usually shoot with manual settings, and I just sharpen up the photos on CS2. Very Happy
