I have a class project in which I have to design a new invention. It has to be a completely original idea. I'm not very creative in this sort of context so figured I would come to wakeskating.com for help. This is posted in the winch forum so obviously I am thinking of some sort of device for a winch. The end goal is to come up with a prototype. It doesn't necessarily have to be working model but I need some physical representation of my project. So basically electronics are out. Designing some type of digital speed control would be sweet but wouldn't really work for the class because I couldn't bring in a physical model. I need some type of physical device. Any ideas? For those with winches, where do you think they could be improved? A system for staking? New transmission, brakes, throttle etc.? I appreciate any ideas. I'll even take non-winching related ideas.

Voice activated solo control via bluetooth earpiece, electronica and a little gay though.
Anchor style stake for planting in the sand.
A fan to keep fumes away from operator.
Auto camera that records when turned on, like stun guns.
A foux cover that looks like those rock shaped speakers, when the cops come be like, "What? just sitting on a rock, lieutenant!"
Air powered winch like MDI

Shore Drive, some really great ideas... i like the foux cover idea.
i still like my winch crossbow. sometimes it's impassable to walk out the rope, so u have to swim. well what if u made a device to launch the handle........given the rope has been pulled or released from the spool. u could launch it up a gap or around a patch of trees or a fence, etc.
i imagine it being larger than an average crossbow, more like a shot gun length with a bow. pull back the bow, place the handle on top centered, aim and fire

Maybe retractable feet for the front so the winch doesnt have to be staked into the ground to be used when off the hitch.

You could easily use a potato gun to do this.
Accuracy might be an issue though.

Make an extremely small backpack winch. Like a 3.5 or 4 hp engine and a spool directly below it all on a small frame that you could carry in on your back. it wouldn't deep start but it would be really convenient.

the biggest improvements need to be in noise reduction, weight, and size.... load it up with a breaking system and releasing spool....
you could make an auto cut off so when the winch is not under load (like when the rider falls) then the engine is killed....
you could install a ratcheting system so the spool locks in one direction and releases in the other... so when your walking it out it free spools and when the engine is on the spool locks up and pulls regularly....
these are all improvements i plan on making on my next winch.... and i will probably do some of these for my design class next semester.... engineering ftw lol
what class are you in?

design a removable spool that fits onto the transmission shaft of a gasoline powered golf cart

how about a remote control boat with an attachment so it can just ride over the handle and catch it to take it back to the rider? Seems way easier than a crossbow, catapult or potato gun... and much safer!

Its been done. BAHHH i know it was a thread on here a long time ago when i just creeped. It was a mini boat you controlled from the handle, it was actually a production concept. Anyone know where it is?

LemonWake, if you controlled it from the handle, how would you get the handle to wherever you wanted it?
correct me if i'm wrong but that seems to be the point in all this handle transportation stuff is to get the handle from one palce to another without having to take it there yourself
if you were controlling where it went from the handle, you would be carrying it would you not?

I thought the same thing spowell. That'd be like a cigarette to get you to quit smoking. Kinda defeats the purpose. lol If you have the handle, what do you need the boat for? The boat brings you the handle...
chicken.... egg............chicken...........................aaaahhh so confused!

A removable seat for the driver
I have an idea for a stake that fits over the male part on the hitch frame. I'll post a picture in a second.

We seem to have a problem with the back of the winch lifting up when pulling someone and need someone to stand on the back to prevent this, using a stake that snugly fits over the part of the frame that slides into the hitch and buries into the ground just might hold it down when pulling a rider and you have a grab point to easily pull it out when you're ready to pack up and leave.
