hey im interested in building a winch similar to NEW's, but i have no idea when it comes to wood (no pun intended). Does anyone know what i would be good making it with? or if i should laminate some layers together with fiberglass to make it stronger?

yeah any help is appreciated, im tired of relying on my friends to go winching...

well i did make a sample peice of wood that was 3 layers of 1/4 inch plywood which i had fiberglass between each layer and then coated it with more resin. it seemed strong enough but idk about a larger scale, plus it seemed like the finished product would be a bit toward the heavy side. im wondering if a single resin coated piece would be strong enough, maybe fiberglass or carbon fiber on only one side... just use metal, you wont regret it, i havent seen the wood winch, but from a practical standpoint it seems like a better material

NEW made it out of starboard, it's durable, waterproof, and expensive, but compared to aluminum im not sure. especially if you can't weld it might be a good option. honestly i'd wait to get some feedback on NEW'S, but you can always build a metal if it breaks i guess

just thinking about the money factor. i think the price will be somewhat similar in the starboard and aluminum. i could be way off though

one good thing about a heavy winch is how stable that damn thing is I've never had a problem with it moving at all when it's not attached to my car
