so i went out sailing today and this school of fish kept swimming back and forth under my boat. i have never seen them before. they seem to be about 2' in length, maybe an inch or so pectoral fins, 6" - 1' pelvic fin and a 6" - 1" caudal fin (top half only) .
anybody have any clue what they are? |

yeah, they were sunfish. i don't know why, i just had never seen any pictures of them before. once i woke up today and wasn't hammered i was able to easily search for it ha.
for those asking, they were gray/blue fading to silver and i was coming out of marina del rey in LA. |

I was on business in Cali last year and drove over to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium (nothing compared the the GA Aquarium btw) but anyways in the great white shark tank, they had a bunch of fish including a HUGE sunfish. It was either 6ft or 8ft tip to tip, can't remember. While I was standing there watching, the sunfish darted from the bottom of the tank to the top and jumped out of the water completely and crashed back in. Everybody eww'd and aww'd. Pretty sweet (and horribly ugly) fish.

The ocean sunfish, Mola mola, or common mola, is the heaviest known bony fish in the world. It has an average adult weight of 1 tonne (2,200 lbs)

ha i like the midget in there. everyone seems very wary of having their picture taken.
nick, no mutinys here.
taku, that's pretty cool. i was surprised to see them in the ocean. sadly, the water in venice and santa monica is so dirty it's amazing to see any living things out there other than dolphins and seals |
