I just got a new hampson 41. My old one broke in under two months.(ya ya i know why did i go with another one, I just love the shape!) I just wanted to know what you guys recommend I use to seal it up with, so i dont have this problem with my new one. I want something i can buy at Home Depot or Lowes.
Thanks,

Minwax "Helmsman Spar Urethane", it comes in a spray can or regular can. Follow the directions and you will be good to go. 2-3 coats with light sanding in between each. _________________

Jesse, Thanks man. About how much is it? And do you have experience using it? If so how does it work? |

Its no more than like 9 dollars, well, your gonna need some light grit sand paper so I guess that factors in on cost as well. Yeah, I use it any time I need it. Its real easy to use, not really any process, ie: its not a 2-part thing you gotta mix or anything. It holds up very well after multiple coats, to abuse or use whatever you wanna say , My Oak GeGe is still holding up very well. _________________

| David_Roehm, My 40 hampson split in two sets...when I get it back from LF I will prob seal mine as well. It is lame that you have to seal a new board so that you can use it but I love the shape as well! |

If you use anything like this make sure that each coat is 100% dry before applying another coat. Otherwise the previous coat won't dry properly and it won't be good. |

When I make mine I usually let them sit 3-5 days between coats...if it's really humid then it takes a long time to dry. If it's really dry where you live...then you shouldn't have to worry about humidity and an extended drying time and you can do it outside or in a garage...but if you're doing it in a really humid environment, definitely lay down a tarp or something in your basement or whatever and do it inside.
Also...I've only ever used the brush on stuff...I'm not sure I would trust the spray on stuff.
Also also make sure you get clear stuff...I didn't pay attention when I did my first board and I used some stuff that dried pee-yellow...so instead of having a nice clean white bottom, I had a banana board. |
