is there that much of a difference between 24p and 30i??
which do you shoot in?

It is not really a matter of what looks better, it is just depending on what you want. All the numbers mean are the average frames per second but are not exact. 60 is standard for video. 24 is film, things aren't as smooth but gives you more of the "movie" look that many people are used to. As for the "p" and "i" it means what scott_a says but as a rule of thumb progressive always is a cleaner look than interlaced.
