will it work to make a winch with a 5 horsepower push lawn mower engine?

if it doesnt we were thinking of just sellling the mower to buy a good engine.

Im guessing it has a verticle shaft? An you want a horizontal shaft.
So sell it an go to harborfreight an bu a honda knock off!

the best honda knocks off's i've seen are Loncin engines. They are bright yellow too so they look good.

ive got another engine thats a 14 horsepower with a vertical shaft, if we just mount a spool directly to the shaft do you think it will have enough power?

no. you need a cluch, and sprockets. No way around it.

first off as soon as you turn the motor on its gona start pulling the rope in with no clutch

you need a clutch for it to idle. And without the sprockets you would have absolutely no torque, unless you compensated with a huge spool inner diameter.
