So i was thinking about building a winch in high school shop class. I had been looking around at prices on motors, TAVs, etc. Well i just went out to my shop and found a 5HP Briggs with a clutch, chain and everything on an old mini bike. At first i was skeptical whether the 5HP would work, but then i searched the winching depot and learned that if geared right it would work. This is going to be awesome!!!!!

Calskater23, 5hp will work like a champ i would say to build as light as possible and make it soo light so u can carry it by yourself make it legit. tophat winch was so legit and it was so light so nice you could pick it by yourself. |

I want to make it compact also with a small spool. I don't really see the need for 800 feet of rope. Really i think i would only need 500 at the most. |

I've been looking to start a winch, I can get a frame built for a 6pack and I'm just looking for a free engine someones throwing out. Are most lawn mowers' crankshafts vertical or horizontal? _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/nizzate/ |

If geared the right way you can. In sfumato they ride behind a 3.5. I'm pretty sure a 5 can get up a 110lb boy.

Pretty sure that they are vertical. |

It's all in the gearing, especially with a smaller engine like that. So play around with some different ratios until you find a happy combination. A TC will help, too.
And that first Rewind winch was 3hp. Thomas was able to get up and ride behind it, but I'm not sure if he deepwater started behind it. |

Sorry i'm just posting all this stuff here so i can refer back to it later. MTwakeRaiderz wrote: | my buddy has a 5Hp Tecumseh w/ a 7.5" spool and 6:1 gear ratio (10T/60T) and he can even deepwater. He is about 165lbs but I am 195lbs and it will pull me off a starting platform on a wakeskate. It is old, ragged, and worn in. He yanked that exhaust pipe off and that thing rips. |
