i just did my friends, use resin, at least two coats it worked good we havent painted it yet though. have fun with it.

seal it with quality wood sealer sanding between each coat with 200 grit paper. 2-3 coats. then once it is sealed you can sand one more time and use about any kind of outdoor paint found at homedepot .
i recommend rolling the paint on with a foam roller it makes it a little shinnier, if your not spraying it.
