This is just the beginning, but here are some pics of my engine and TAV2 mounted up, I'm stoked to say the least, all the parts are in the garage all I need to do is fab up a spool and buy the line still debating over bulletlines or that amsteel stuff, and we're getting the frame built this weekend.
Going with steel for now, until my buddy learns to tig weld, then the frame will be up for sale and there will be an aluminum frame rebuild (way in the future)
Ameritrail quoted about $35 to $50 to powdercoat the frame.
I'll try to keep this updated as the project develops, Just wanted to thank everyone on here for there help so far.

Also on a side note im not sure why everyone had to grind out the back of there TAV, i just switched my oil caps, small clear for one of the yellow ones, and the fits fine, only problem i forsee is some vibration. |

How much does it usually cost to make a winch yourself? |

Update! Ok so it's not that much news but I thought I'd keep the thread going.
Mounted my sprocket to my hub, did a little work on the axle, and came up with a frame design I want to used, nice and compact. Also picked up two 10 foot sticks of 1 by 2" steel tubing and a 1 by 2 foot piece of steel diamond plate for an engine mount. Going to the depot to get the parts for the spool tomorrow.
Work on the frame starts Sunday morning, hoping we can get her welded up in one day.
Here are some more pics.
Steel
Finally got to ride last night, its been two weeks, had some fun freezing my ass of at OWC for a solid two hours, stoked they moved the box, so I don't have to walk all the way around the lake.

Ok I can see that wasn't enough for anyone, so here is my frame, tacked up and ready for my buddy to lay some nice welds on, it should be fully welded, ends capped, and cleaned up, ready to get powder coated by midweek. Gonna have to throw down and order my goddamn line, atleast pay day is this week.
I'm not really sure what dimensions to make my spool, the frame is 18 inches wide, and a spool with an outside wall diameter of around 14 inches is about all that will clear on my winch. Width?? Inside diameter i have no clue.?...?
Here's Some shots I took tonight.

chitts, That Torque A Verter is a gearing system that allows more torque for deep water starts and it also provides more top end speed for when you need it.
You don't need a brake, but it is always nice to have one. Alot of people just turn the winch off when the handle is getting close.
Check out www.winchskating.com for more specific info to help you build your own. You can also try to use the search button on here, most likely someone has already answered the question your looking for, you just have to find it.
Hope that helps. _________________ ~ www.integrity-wake.com ~ www.iwinchglobal.com ~ |

Soulprogression, that frame design is man man. Good job
It doesn't look like you have too much extra room for the spool. Judging from the pictures and what you said I'd suggest 13.5" OD, 7.5" ID, and 5-6" wide. That frame looks a little heavy so plan to put wheels on because you'll probobly want them later.
Keep posting pics of your progress. |

Got an update for everyone, after a long friday night of mistakes, problems, hard work, and drunken dedication, somehow our winch managed to come together, glad we decided to do everything before we got the frame powder coated because we definitely ran into some issues and fixed them. Got everything together basically friday night, ran it and spooled on the 600 ft of blue bullet lines and called it a night. Finished it off saturday morning and did one successful test pull with the skateboard at full length and decided to go winching.
We set up at a sweet little pond on a friends property, managed about a 400 foot pull or so, a little dock to ollie over and a small trolling motor powered catamaran to take the rider to the other side of the pond. Ended flipping a fiberglass canoe over on the end of the dock and made a sick little incline rail. We pulled for probably 3 hours without a hitch, the winch worked flawlessly, and used about a drop of gas out of the tank. Needless to say I'm absolutely stoked, and can't wait to get it put together right. The frame is getting painted white this week, need a new axle due to some damage during construction, and building a new spool with lexan sides, but for now we have an amazing little machine.
Will have a short video from the inaugural session up as soon as i can find the charger for my camera
Here's some pics as she sits now.

Looks like the 08 bulletline. Man that winch is soo sick bro nice work. What did you make the side walls of your spool out of?
Post pics once you take it out for some test runs. |

the side walls are from some material i found at this place called skycraft up on fairbanks right off I4 in Orlando, I'm pretty sure it's like a PVC material because its pretty strong but cuts easily with a jigsaw just tends to melt a little bit.
Second session today in a pond in my buddies neighborhood, things went well, lot's of stumped and amused neighbors and even had a sheriff stop by, he told us he had no problem with it but if a homeowner called the PD we might get kicked out, looks like open season around town for us now.
Unfortunately due to our spool being too wide and the inner diameter too small the line spooled up loose and a section caught the part of the fair lead roller and snapped, mid ride, kinda sucked but tied the two together with a nice fishermans knot and used some heatshrink to clean it up, only lost 2 feet of line, will find out tomorrow if it will hold.
How does a 8 inch 4 bolt rim with lexan sides sound for a nice new solid round spool? |

I took a better look at one of your pics. Briggs came out with a brand new block design, and you got one of the new ones. They must have changed some dimensions around the oil fill necks. Not necessarily to make a TAV fit better, bet you never know. Enjoy your winch. Best thing i've ever built. So much fun with friends. Brings a whole new feeling to wakeskating.
