ok well i have a generator that my dad doesnt want anymore and it runs and all, but i was thinking yesterday and i noticed it had a 10hp engine and a perfect frame. i was wondering if anyone has built a winch out of one??

so heres my crappy paint mock up, but i think it gives a pretty good idea. the blue thing is a centrifigual clutch, assuming the drive shaft is on that side. and then just mount the pillow baerings on the two sides of the frame and have the spool/axle go acvross the front.

homez, Your best bet would be to rape the engine out of the frame and build your own. You have a good base though, a 10hp will do you good and its really the most expensive part of the whole build.

SleuCrew, i agree... unless you are goin to add onto the frame there is very little chance you will be able to fit your spool set up in that frame... take the engine and build a quality winch

You could use the frame. Just take off the generator bit and turn the engine by 90degrees. that should give you space to fit the spool. The frame we used for our winch used to be a pressure washer although the frame was way smaller than yours.
I personally like the idea because you can get away with a minimal amount of welding and I like recycling
Before you start buying parts break the generator down and check what kind of a shaft is on the engine! Friends of mine here ended up with a threaded shaft which was a bit useless...
