Well, after wanting to do a winch for months, things have finally come together and now im getting somewhere, I ordered all my parts on monday, so hopefully they will be here by the weekend. And today I got all the metal im going to need to buil the frame, mount the engine, the only thing im missing right now is the rope and the spool.

After buying the metal today I cut 90% of it to size and mocked it up, so heres the pic and a computer generate finished project

if any of you guys have suggestions for budget rope besides the qc supply stuff i'd love to hear it

i also got my motor and frame on a scale and the motor weighs 27lbs and the frame weighs 6lbs with what ive cut out already, so if im lucky it'll be below 50lbs

total $$$ spent so far = $152

how do you plan on mounting the engine?

you need a pretty thick engine plate welded to the rest of the frame or the winch will vibrate like a massive dildo Shocked

besides that I like the design, simple. But you could go for shorter and more angled support bars, you can also have the vertical steel bars angled forward a little.

it is easier if you build the frame as you put the winch together with all the parts, will help a ton making everything fit just right and aligned

Sick frame, are you using Aluminum? Looks a little like the frame I'm planning..just a little bit.

Nekkie, why should the vertical bars be angled foward? wouldn't that generate more efort on the structure? I'm planing on using my winch mainly attatched to my truck's hitch structure. I'm afraid the frame migth not hold the force.

LAXitives288, nice job.... how strong is that engine? I'm planning on using a 13hp engine cause I don't wanna strugle with speed and deep water stars.

13 hp is so much overkill... and the structure wont really matter either way in my oppinion... once its all welded together angled or not that thing is not going to budge...

i believe his engine is a 5 horse

If you are good with starts you can use a cc and 6.5hp motor. Just don't push too hard when trying to do deep water

IDK, that frame looks to be thin aluminum square. It would not be my first choice of metal for a frame, but i could be wrong. Smash Nice design and such though.

If you angle your front bars down there is no need for the gussets(sp???).

Aluminum frames are the way to go, they don't weigh anything near the weight of steel. By angling your front of your frame forward it gives you a little more room so it isn't so tight.

BRAZIL-CONCAVEwakeskates, I wouldn't suggest a 13 hp engine, you could easly save yourself money and buy a 9hp and put on a cvt (torque converter) if your really sceptical about deep water starts. a 9 hp engine is still lots, but a 13hp is just unnecessary...I have a 6.5 hp without a cvt and i can do deep water starts fine.

BRAZIL-CONCAVEwakeskates, over kill is a bad thing, you can get the job done with a smaller engine , ex. a 6.5hp rather than a 13hp, the 13hp is gonna have alot of extra weight that isnt needed, but you will still have plenty of power with a 6.5hp, and you will save money which is aloso a factor in building a winch

FingersMcGee, price.dan, thanks guys.

The problem is that over here in brazil I can't get this torq a veter thing and the cvt here is very expensive and hard to find, so i'm planing on using a cc first. If it does not work I migth try and get a cvt, maybe even buy one from USA. I'm looking for a used 8-9hp engine, but the 13 ones are easyer to find.

I'm concearned about deep water cause one of my best frends is a sick skater but is way heavy, so I'm afraid he wont be able to get on surface if the area is short.

I'll probably buy an engine this weekend. I'll post the stuff I get and get opinion from people here and from winchsakating.com.

thanks

9hp is good if you're looking to pull up really big guys. 13 hp will also work, but will be a bit heavier. good luck with your winch Smile

lake tarpon, centrifugal clutch...

BRAZIL-CONCAVEwakeskates, torq-a-verter is a cvt... torq-a-verter is just a brand of a cvt... just like honda is a brand of a car
