How many wakeskate companies are there right now. I mean anything, I know that cassette isnt exactly making skates right now but they count, so does AKONITE even though they are still in progress. I am just curious because I want to think about what companies will survive.

There is a small company in Virginia Beach that hand makes all of it's decks. He doesn't make very many, and he doesn't advertise, but it is still a skate company: Beach Wood Masters; BWM Wakeskates. _________________ Sattelyte Wakeskates

Olive (Canada)
Tractor (Canada)
Moment (Japan) http://www.moment.cc/home.html
Once the entire list is complied, you should order them by date of creation.
What does the future hold for all these companies? Who knows.... We can look at snowboarding as an example.
I remember the Big ski companies started to make snowboards in the mid-90s after snowboarding really started to gain momentum. Once it appeared that the ski companies could make a solid return on their R&D investments, they transfered their ski technology over to boards. The main ski-companies that come to mind are: Salomon, Rossignol, Volki. None of these companies can be considered early pioneers of snowboarding, but now they make a ton of money off it (maybe not Volki). Many of the early originating snowboarding companies (Barfoot, Division 23, Kemper) has sinced pretty much fizzled away. Which is unfortunate because they were great companies. There are obviously ROC snowboard companies around today, but not nearly as many as I remember.
What is the point of all this.....It would suck for any smaller-ROC comapny to become a footnote in wakeskating's history while wakeboard/larger companies control a significant portion of the market. It happened in snowboarding, it can easily happen in wakeskating.
I am NOT saying wakeboarding/big companies are bad. In fact, they make the sport better and we need them!!!!! I just remember a lot of cool/progressive snowboard companies (especially during the new school days) that are no longer around. It makes me sad.
This is just my opinion/view.... _________________ Life's Kredo = "When the snake falls in love with the spagetti it's time to buy a new hat." & "I guess I need to whiskey up these corn flakes..and heroin up this Orange Juice." |

oppss...my bad. It appears that Division 23, Barfoot, and Kemper are all back. But they appear to be different companies then they once were....(at least on the surface). _________________ Life's Kredo = "When the snake falls in love with the spagetti it's time to buy a new hat." & "I guess I need to whiskey up these corn flakes..and heroin up this Orange Juice." |

the funny thing is that the "ski" companies in wakeskating have been making boards since the very beginning. Hyperlite had a pretty standard board out in 1998 (while buying traction pads from Jason Messer) and as we all know, LF joined up with thomas in 2000, though they had their waterskate out in 1999 or so.
However, I will say that for the most part, I like the designs from the smaller companies. And again, after talking to jimmy at LF, he's taking a lot of pride in the impulse series this year (specifically), which is nice to see. I like that guy...
also, cassette is still making boards. Granted, it's in extremely small quantities and I'm proud to say that I have an 06 bi-level. In my opinion, he's one of the truest guys out there. There may not be a lot of monetary "success", but he's always followed his heart in all of this (with money never being an object to gain) and he's still down to design a board. That warms my heart people, that warms my heart... _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com*

actually, wasn't kemper one of the earlier, crazier companies that were founded by jamie salter? It was more of a money making venture, if I remember correctly (that jamie salter guy had that kind of reputation). After that, he also helped start the original "ride" snowboards, which had a killer image but again, there was some clever marketing behind that company as well, and behind that fascade was a money driven motive. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

d23 is still d23, they're just crap now.
Stepchild is cool, for sure...but if you care, one thing to look at is board construction and what you're getting in a board. To me, their core construction seemed pretty standard..just not anything too special, "IMO"...I ride a lib and they're not rider owned anymore, but the original guys still have partial ownership and they're the most fun/most creative company out there (for me). And my dark series is the best board I've ever ridden. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |
