After building for a couple of weeks I finished the spool and got a fairlead, chain, and splash guard. The spool looks good to me but is a little off balance and the pillow blocks move slightly when it is spinning. I will post more pictures as I get farther in the build.

Hey I got some metal tubing and I don't know how long to make the frame. I dont have an engine yet but I plan on using a 9 or 13 hp lifan engine. My plan right now is to make it 38" long, but I don't know if it lack the space for the engine.

I made the frame on sketch up. I'll probably cut the metal today or tomorrow. I still think the frame may be too short

The dimensions of the engine are not posted online?

Home depot has the dimensions posted but many of their products have measurements that don't match the actual product. I also don't know how much of the engine can hang over the back of the frame. I cut all the pieces of the frame and decided to make the frame 40" long. I'm trying to keep the frame small as small as I can to make the winch easy to transport.
Also, should I get the 9 or 13 hp engine they are the same price.

Why wouldn't you just get the engine and measure it yourself before you made the frame instead of guessing and potentially making a frame that doesn't fit or is to big.
Also, if you want it to be more transportable get the 9hp engine, it'll be lighter and that's plenty of power anyway.

wakethecape, that sounds like a better idea but I don't currently have the money for an engine. I'm just building it piece by piece as I earn more money. My preferred option would involve buying all the parts at once and and build the frame to the smallest size for the components. I'm going to do the best I can with substituting the dimensions of the engine from online and worst case scenario I will have to cut or weld the frame to make it shorter or longer.

Go to harbor Freight and get a engine. You can get a year or two year warranty. Depending on your size a 6.5hp works great. Ours deeps waters 200+. Just a thought. Also, I'm selling my old winch frame if you have any interest. It's all powder coated and built up. But I would look into a HF predator engine.

Borrow a credit card, buy the engine, mark the frame up, return the engine.
Does the 13hp weigh much more than the 9hp?

Thats a great idea but the only problem is the engines are only carried online. I could try it with a harbor freight engine because I'm pretty sure they are carried in their stores. They don't carry a 9 hp though.
As far as weight difference goes the 13 hp is 22 pounds heavier.(9 hp=60lb 13hp=82lb. Those are the specs from home depot's website.
Also, about those 6.5 hp harbor freight engines. Some people say they deep water start just fine, have plenty of speed. Others say they they can't do deep water starts and have problems with speed. Without messing around with the governor, using a 60 tooth sprocket, and a 10 tooth tav, what could this engine really do? It would be nice to cut the engine cost but I would rather pay more for a bigger engine to avoid these problems.

I believe I run 52/10#. I could be wrong. We are in the middle of building a new frame so everything is at the shop right now. The thing with deep water starts is it's a lot different then your normal pull. That could be why some people say they don't DW start. I've personally seen guys on my winch who have been riding for years at 200 pounds not be able to get up. Then my roommate, who never rides and is 220 has no problem getting up. I think it's just different. HF has a 8hp motor.

Im just going to buy the 6.5hp because I am tired of waiting to buy an engine. I figured the price is better than the higher hp engines.

amsteel 1/8 or 7/64. does the 7/64 hold up comparably to 1/8. It is definitely cheaper and might drag a little less?
