Safety, patience, sobriety and caution are all very important factors in a good day out winching, but when talking about my winching crew we lack every single one of those. What are some of your begginer winching mistakes, mishaps or horror stories? Include pictures or video. Mine include..
-forgetting to clip the other side of the chain that goes around a tree to secure the winch, causing the winch to go flying into my friend driving it and the chain slingshotting around the tree sweeping out my legs and cutting my shin, in a matter of 2 seconds there where 2 ppl on the ground not knowing what happened and the rider pissed as hell.
-the first day using a pickup truck to drive the handle back, driver was goin around 10 mph while my friend was in the back holding the handle around his elbow, when a knot got caught in the spool and sent my friend flying airborn out of the truck, fvcked up his left arm, and face.
-trying to slide off a dock to start, not enough speed due to shiznackle driving smacked the back of my head.
-we set up this kayak at the end of our lake to trick over, my friend fell on a shuv before he got to it but out of instinct and just being a dumbass held onto the rope (so he wouldnt have to swim in)going headfirst and ran straight into the kayak.haha.
-this is easily the worst accident, we had the winch set up by a tree around 20 feet from the lake (right where the lake starts theres a little 4 foot hill leading down to it), well I was driving the winch and my friend was ending his run going the full speed of my winch which is around 22 mph, well he had full confidence that I would stop the winch in time so all he had to worry about was his riding and I had full confidence he would let go and I could let the handle run all the way in. We were both wrong. Everything from here on i saw in slow motion, he tried to jump off at the very last second (i already knew he was fvcked) but ended up landind on shore right on the little hill, bounced off it, went flying through the air very fast until he was stopped in midair by the winch, he flew all the way to the fvcking winch in the air, he ends up completely curled around it with a gash on his shoulder where his shoulder hit the corner of the winch, it could have been a lot worse coulda been his head, just ended up with 4 stitches. I would have done absolutely anything to have gotten this on video.
A picture where the last story took place below, you can see how far he flew and this picture was taken when the water level was alot higher. lfarmada I made my winch, cost me around 700$ total, runs flawlessly

winches are no joke. they are very dangerous--and when things go wrong you can loose body parts. we've been lucky with my winch, and my friends winches so far.

I just made my new frame an had a new engine, so we are out for a test run an we decide to try stakes for the first time. First pull was me It was great!. second pull with my 200 pound friend, The winch flys 4ft in the air an tumbles down the hill 50ft The back handle of the frame was in the water! I almost saw my new winch go straight into the lake! All it did was break my chain an it got all caught up in the TAV. next week it was all good and it was pulling good. But I will never use stakes ever again!!

had the line wrapped around my hand pulling/running line out off the spool for the rider, who with the handle on the other end decided to take off running, line goes taught, rope catches and stops at the spool and my hand is right in the middle, crushed the fvck outa it, only some nasty bruising but could've easily destroyed my hand, but add the fact that i jammed the piss outa my thumb of the other hand on the rail 5 minutes earlier and it makes driving a winch and a truck for that matter a painful experience
another time was pulling on a small cliff like hill and didn't shut the winch down fast enough. handle richochets off the bank and comes whipping in and cracks me flat in the back, just missed taking it to the head
luckily nothing really bad has ever happend to me or anyone i've winched with, other than some gnarly ball racks on rails, some jammed fingers and thumbs on rails, and a few cracks to the head from flying boards.
i miss my winch

sandiego4real, you gotta angle the stakes so the winch wont slip off. we always use stakes and never had a problem.

i was trying to shuv over a picnic table and i told the drive to speed up, he hit the throttle the wrong way right before i was about to ollie and my leg slammed right into the side of the picnic table. my board exploded, somehow my leg didnt.
i got a horrible infection on my leg from fbag.
the other day the kid driving my winch decided to throw it full throttle as i was holding onto just the rope, burned the shizzle outa my hand but not too bad.
winching can be really sketchy, especially with gaps. if your winch isnt running perfect alot of times you shouldnt even use it on a gap.

so how do you guys keep your winches down
my friend had attached his to a tree with a rope sling thing and the rider was getting pulled at an angle and the winch flew to the side and the spool sliced through my friends knee it was pretty bad
anyways
its the released winch with that aluminum frame and the detachable spool,
is it safer to stake it down or like stand on it or something?
thanks

any combination of a tie down strap, 18 inch steaks and body weight seem to work well for me.
