You might be able to search google for wakeskating history. See how that goes.

I think if I were you I might consider locating a more prominent sport or you are going to be shafted, ha ha. However rad wakeskating may be, I think it might be a challenge to write 1000 words on the history of a sport that has been around for less than 10 years.

Thats roughly 3 pages... it could be done as long as he spaces alot of things out and rabbles on a bit. Include maybe bios, maybe a timeline them sorta things.

Three Names: Byerly, Horrel, Schmaltz.
Well you can start with how some wakeboarders just started to ride wakeboards bindingless. Then guys like Gator, Byerly, Horrel, etc, started cutting down wakeboards and sticking astrodeck pads on for traction (there was even a few astrodeck wakeskate pro pads), then move on to how wooden flat decks were developed, then go onto concave decks, both wooden and compression.............

If a picture is worth more than a thousand words it should be easy to write as much about the history of wakeskating.
Wakeskate history should include one jason messer. Dont know who he is?
Me, sapporo, give you hints... west coast, trac top, barefoot.

For starters, I would not say that byerly's 360 shove was the first wakeskating moment because a) byerly said that he saw matt maloy do a shove on a wakeskate before him and b) there was a picture of a different guy wakeskating in wbm before that 360 shove.
With that said, one possible direction you could take this article would be by mentioning a number of early pioneers and where they began to perfect the art because I don't think there's any possible way to define where wakeskating began. Obviously the florida guys were riding cut down wakeboards and occassionally blank skate decks. And then there was jason messer, who lived in the NW and started making products for wakeskating back in 1996 (fwt--yes, sapporo). And it may be hard to find information on these guys, but schmaltz and smith were some early wakeskaters.
also, I think the astrodeck traction pads were carried over from surfing, and they weren't made specifically for wakeboarding.

skatemywake,
This is taken from a 1998 WBM article (the link to the whole article is below):
"One technical innovator of wakeskating is Jason messer. Jason lives in Portland, OR, and has been wakeskating and experimenting with boards and traction for five years. Jason was influenced by the surfing style of Christian Fletcher in the late 1980's. He admired Christian's approach - the water as a flowing skate park. "I always used to look at the water and think, how would it be to skateboard on the water," Jason says. Out of this desire jason started shaping boards for the specific purpose of wakeskating. "I love the purity of wakeskating. There are no rock stars, no blueprints to follow. Everyone interprets it their own way," Messer says.
Jason's company, Fresh Water Traction, produces foam wakeskates and bolt-on traction pads. These boards have a soft foam top and bottom and will save you from excessive pain. Soft boards are the key to the future because they will allow people to push the progression curve even harder. Following Jason's lead, Hyperlite has two wakeskates in its line for 1998. These boards will have foam tops and hard bottoms and come with Fresh Water's traction pads."

btw: I like Colin Wright's definition of wakeskating...

im oretty sure people have been doing the stuff on "wakeskates forever", has anybody ever used a saucer? There just circlesof wood that people have been riding on like since the 70's. I know someone who has atleast and anyway they would do like all sort of surface spins ect. and there were no bindings, you could also trace the start of wakeskating to skimboarding in little ocean pools thats pretty close especially if someone ows you you by like a big peice of seaweed. ANyway what im saying is the ideaa for wakeskating has been aroungd forever there a just a couple guys that got it going.

"Freeboard AquaPlaning" first started around 1935 in Hawaii. (source: Hawaii tourist bureau) i have some old pictures of people riding long boards behind a boat.
here is an ad of a girl wake surfing in 1964.
it's not necessarily wakeskating, but some of it's roots are found here.
