I have never built any type of rail for wakeskating or wakeboarding. I have a few questions about the material to use...

Can I use wood for my rail?
Does wood rot in water?
How long will a wood rail last?

Thnx if you can answer these questions. Very Happy

yea dont use wood, it wont last very long and i dont think it will slide very well unless you wax it up. if you really want to use wood you can buy some pvc pipes and put them across the top to slide on.

OH, i wasn't gonna slide on the wood, I was gonna use it as the frame. We have some of that "fake ice" plastic stuff, the kind used for snowboard boxes, i was gonna put that on the top but since wood won't last long, i better try something else.

wood would last long enough, it doesn't have to last a century. plus to make the whole thing with that plastic stuff would cost a fortune. alumninum is probably the best but it is so expensive too. grouch has the best idea with the pvc pipes

If you use pressure treated wood, it'll last a long time.

My dad built a crib dock purely out of pressure treated 4x4's and rebar, and after 8 years, through ice and everything else, it's still in pretty much the same shape since it was built. We haven't had to repair it at all...

However, I can't say much for it's sliding ability. You might wanna build the frame with pressure treated wood then use trex or PVC pipes on the sliding area...

hey, a few years ago me and my friend built a 60 foot A frame rail made out of pressure treated lumber with the sliding surface made of 1/4 inch puck board cut into strips about 8 inches wide. The rail is still in great condition and we built it in like 4 days and it cost us just about $500 bucks canadian.

If you are going to use wood in a place where it sits in the water, you must use the expensive pressure treated/marine grade stuff...at least if you want it to last for more than a month. It has that greenish tint to it when compared to every other kind of plywood. You can get away with it for a longer period of time in fresh water, but the salt water will rot anything. All of the rails I have seen are made with those 4X4 wood posts, I assume they are the pressure treated kind, but I'm not sure. Just spend the extra money so you will be guaranteed that your hard work wont rot away and fall over.

Pressure treated wood works perfect. It will last plenty long enough. Once barnicals and all that shizzle get on it, it actualy helps it to last longer. Definatly go w/ wood and just pick up a peice of vinal from home depo and use it for the top. That shiot is slick.
I made my rail out of wood just get a 1 x 6 for the top and slap it on some
4 x 4 posts.
