Found a few local CNC machine shops and they turned me down. So now i have no clue on how to go about getting my spool's side walls cut out. I thought about just ordering a pre built off ebay but the side walls are too large for my frame. It was gonna be a tight squeeze with 14" side walls.

Just got word the TAV has been delivered. Fired up the engine ealier today its a beast. Placed the order for the spool and the rest of the parts just now should be getting everything else in a week or 2. I'm gonna have to make adjustments to the frame to make everything fit but shouldn't be too big a deal, I had metal left over so hopefully that'll be all I need to get the job done. So I'm crossing my fingers I'll be able to have it together and running by the end of the month. Crazy Eyes

you can fab spool walls relatively cheap just takes hard work, I'm cutting the rough spool circle out of 3/8" diamond plate aluminum with a jig saw then using a template and carbide router bit to get the smooth perfect circle similar to what Rhino did here:

just buy a releasing spool. You'll save yourself time, money and headaches.

IMO the spool is one of the hardest parts of the winch. It's gotta be perfectly aligned, measured/cut, and welded/or bolted. Not to mention at the end of it, your going to be fighting to pull the rope out every time.

Do it! we can race our winches haha, just got the new axle, sprocket, and hub in today, still waiting for the spool that I ordered off ebay. I guess I'm gonna have to go ahead and fork up the money for the rope myself. New skate, rope and handle for boat/ski sets, and now winch rope......goodbye tax return.

there is nothing wrong with the $20 600' rope from Harbor Freight, it does not stretch and does not rot, winch ropes take a beating so there's no sense in spending alot of cash on the rope unless you have a designated winch spot with no rocks, concrete or rough surfaces for the rope to encounter, and if you do, you're lucky

supermanotorious, just b/c you don't see anyone else winching doesn't mean you winch the most, it just means no one winches around you! Just remember... you get what you pay for. Don't expect your rope to last long if its only 20 bucks.

texasT, I'm with you. The first stage is denial. 2nd stage is not riding b/c he snapped his cheap rope.

Sagittorious, just buy the good stuff first, its cheaper in the long run.

what about punting babies? Lol I can't remember where I saw that just put it as my signature when I started this account. I'll change it one of these days. Man I can't wait to get back to work on my winch. Just waiting on the spool, once the spools in, its game time and I'm gonna get this sucker done!
