So I got a 6.5hp engine off a friend. Already bought the steel to make the frame probably gonna do all the cutting tomorrow. Gonna use a basic design I found on here. I'm about to order the TAV 3/4" 12teeth #35 chain . A few questions I have and haven't been able to find a straight answer yet is "What size sprocket should I use? Is it relevant to the number of teeth on the TAV. Also whats a general size for a spool for 600Ft of rope?" Thanks guys any help will be greatly appreciated.

I built a winch with a 6.5 hp engine aswell. I have a 10 tooth TAV with a 54 tooth sprocket. A good ratio is around 1/5 or 1/6 so you should probably get a sprocket with about 66 teeth. I also have 600 ft of line. What kind of line are you using and do you want the the diameter of the bars the line spools on or the diameter of the sides that hold the line in place?

4" or 6" inner with a 7.5" wall to wall diamter sounds about right.

60T sprocket will be good, or even larger if you can, you'll need it for the torque, if you find you need more top end speed, see if you can remove the govenor or get an upgrade kit for the engine

Thanks for the advice guys. The rope I found is blue amsteel everyone said 7/64. I think a 6" inner would do best, I just don't know how wide to get the outside walls cut to be able to keep in 600ft. of rope? Also 7.5 wall to wall seems small, I've never done this before so what do I know. I'm gonna try and post a crappy paint drawing of what I think your talking about and what I dont know. Out of scale of but ya know.

Correct on the wire feed. I had to make a few changes on the spools w2w width. I could only find 8" bolts so along with the side walls and having enough thread on the bolts its gonna be thinner. so I might have them cut the side walls to 14" diameter. Thanks for the positive feed back, I still have a lot of work to do b4 I can get her running but I'll keep ya updated with the build.

I haven't been out to work on it in awhile now but managed to make it down to Baytown to pick up a 11hp engine. Stopped by Northern Tool in North Houston, that store should be burnt to the ground. Only managed to get the pillow block bearings there. Should be getting the TAV in around Wednesday. Just need to get the side walls for the spool, the sprocket and the rope. After that were in business. I've lost track of how much I've spent so far but im pretty sure I've spent over 400.
