i don't get to see my dad too often. won't on father's day and he likes updated pictures of me. i was just going to have a buddy take one of me and my dog or something simple. i'd like to to look nice so i was wondering if anyone could give me some tips to make it come out nicely. i have a light meter and im using a 35mm 3.5-22 thanks.

This sounds like a relatively simple photo setup so there's no need to get overly technical with how you're shooting it. I would suggest taking a few shots in full auto mode to see what that looks like. If the photo is just you standing/sitting w/ your dog then Auto mode is probably all you'll need. If you want you can put the camera in 'aperture priority' and set the aperture to f9 and see how that comes out. I wouldn't over think this...any point n shoot or d-slr should be able to handle this with minimal effort.

One thing I would suggest is to take the photo in the evening when the sun is lower in the sky. This will make the image look a bit nicer since the evening light is softer than the mid-day light (so there will be less harsh shadows than during the day).
