I think one of the biggest problems instituting something ala the Autobahn in the U.S. is our culture as a whole. Everyone in the U.S. is a multi-tasker we want to get as many things done at one time as possible. That is why you see someone driving down the interstate with a laptop in the car while texting and eating all while telling the kids in the back seat to shut the hell up. |

Wow sick is it still there? I thought it got gobbled up by The Man and slapped with a speed limit in the past few years or something.

yeah I don't know that's why I threw "was" in there. the last I heard about it a friend of a friend was talking about it at a car show. this was probably like 7 or 8 years ago when I first started getting into cars. he was saying him and a bunch of dudes from supraforums went up there. at one point they were in a line going around 90 and a cop pulled up and told them to be careful. then one of them got pulled over at 110 and the cop asked if he thought that was safe. the dude said yeah, he runs road courses a lot and it was totally safe so the cop let him go. I don't know how much of it was a true really as I wasnt there but it sounded pretty reasonable at the time...who knows? _________________ I'm no scientist, but I do drink a lot of booze. |

I've seen plenty of accidents where insane speeds were a huge factor. As speed increases, the time you have to react to a situation drastically decreases. This is a fact. People in Germany aren't any more able to cope with this fact than Americans. |

urinal mint, not true! at least not most of the time. drivers education in the us is a plain joke! common, most of the us citizens don't know how to operate a stick shift.
in order to take your test in germany you have to get a total of like 20+ hrs of driving in different conditions (night, city, highway, freeway) and the theoretical part is pretty damn difficult too.
when you always have to deal with those conditions you're trained to get along. |

bachlonso,
I would feel different if it was an empty road or at least lots of lanes to separate you from slower traffic. Even on a racetrack with corner workers watching out for everyone the disparate speeds between cars entering the track and cars on the straight are extremely dangerous. Forcing this on the general public who have equal rights to the roadway is borderline homicidal.
In case anyone doubts what disparate speeds can cause:

urinal mint, My thought is that people need to be aware of surroundings. With more safety bullsh!t they begin to lose the ability to watch out for them selves. |

bachlonso, you are so right about the stick shift part. But you guys have to get 20 hours, we have to get 8,766 hours before we can have a license and drive by ourselves. Being able to drive a stick, driving 20+ hours in different conditions and having a harder test in no way makes your reaction time better.
i just want to know why every one is always in a rush? slow down and enjoy life. _________________ TEAM FUN!!!!!!

the rechtsfahren law is seriously punishable, and they are HARSH about it. thats why people arent stuppid about it like here in the US where slow idiots are always clogging the left lane. there you stay rigt or you die. and if you are going slow in the left lane there and someone crashes into you, you are the driver at fault for not being in your assigned lane. |

EJazzle, sure enough it doesn't shorten reaction time but it forces you to really comprehend how traffic runs. i guess it's just something different when you grow up here and you are used to the driving environment. i mean, going 150mph isn't such of a big deal for me. done it quite a few times.
urinal mint, i surely understand your point of view. but as i stated, you didn't grow up here so you can't quite understand it to the fullest. people are used to it and statistics speak the facts. but, as traffics gets thicker and thicker over here, they are talking about putting up speed limits on all autobahn (a lot of segments already have limits)
for my part, i quit going really fast because it freaks you out when people block the left lanes. it's way more relaxing to go with the flow.
mr.foonis, i wish they would be more harsh about it as theres still plenty of idiots out there |

Yes, that is what is supposed to happen. But in my parts, there is no such thing. People will be doing 70 in a 75 down the left lane all the way to their destination. I've seen it way too many times, especially on Friday night, driving to the lake. _________________ If you don't like my fire then don't come around. Cuz I'm gonna burn one down.
