paulmc, very good point. wakeboarding has roots in "surfing behind boats" (which went by many names, including wakeboarding). The thing is, I have an action now magazine from the early 80s and the way those guys rode was closer to wakeskating as we know it than most would realize. Granted, they weren't doing shuvs, but they were popping re-entry ollies, hand shaping smaller boards, lipslides, etc. It's pretty cool how things evolved, and as far as what I've seen with wakeboarding's history, the early 80s before any skurfers was what I'd been missing.

So wakeskating would definitely exist without skateboarding. It's kind of about influences and who gets their hold on things. Of course wakeskating/wakeskaters have closer adopted the stylistic ideas of skating more than anything else.

I was pondering a similar question while on the boat this weekend. The water was rough, and I thought to myself, why am I here? I could be out having fun skateboarding. Which made me question why I, or anyone, wakeskates at all. We're just trying to do skate tricks, so why not just spend the time actually skateboarding?

I never arrived at any conclusions and will continue to wakeskate and skateboard.

Greg T, b\c skateboarding will never imitate the feeling you get on top of the water...

surfing is THE number one contributer to all board sports and the style of the ways boards are ridden

Greg T, I sometimes think the same thing, then I realize it is 100 degrees outside and say, I should do this on the water instead. Sure, nothing compares to the concrete jungle but it sure is hot in the said jungle also. Wakeskate in the summer and skate during the cooler months when the water temp doesn't allow.

stompin9s, agreed Exclamation

overstreet31, thats really the only good reason I could come up with.

BB, somewhat true, but wakeskating will never have the variety of tricks/terrain or legitimacy of skateboarding.

i agree, that's because anybody can skateboard as long as they have a board and some concrete

wakeskating is a lot more expensive and not possible without another person

yookyle, most of us do skateboard i would say, but wakeskating is DIFFERENT. whether it is better or worse is all personal opinion.
i'm sure if we didn't think wakeskating was better than skateboarding we wouldn't do it....
