I read a couple writes online about it. Im tired of buying tapes. Im thinking ill wear a bookbag and just run a firewire from my laptop to my camera when im filming.

It should make the quality a little better then tape eh?

Anyone have experience with this?

it won't make the quality any better than tape... If you shoot in true 1920x1080 resolution, your camera will only export 1440 x 1080 (hdv format) via firewire.

Get a camera with an hdmi ouput and have an hdmi input on your computer & you'll be set. (full 1920 x 1080)

the only bad thing about shooting to a computer is that it's a computer, and we all know computers can suck sometimes. You would also prob kill the life expectancy of your computer by taking it everywhere and bouncing it around. It still has a hard drive in it that is affected by rough movement.

Look into a hard disk recorder (solid state), that way you don't have to risk your computer.

I would advise against this idea. I realize you're strapped for cash, but DV tape is still cheap, and they can be reused several times if you need to (as long as you capture your footy to an external hard drive). By bringing your laptop onto a boat you are introducing a TON of new variables into an equation which still isn't foolproof even under the best of circumstances. There is little to gain, and so much to lose IMO...

HVX, huh? So when do you plan on buying a machine that can edit footy from that HVX? Or were you planning on continuing to use your macbook? Laughing
