Hi,

Been in the process of building a winch very slowly (think i have the engine a year now!).
I've got a 6.5hp engine, #41 TAV, 600ft of bulletlines cable and a frame welded out of box steel. I'm at a loss to what all the little parts are to get this completed. Anyone built a similar setup and got a shopping list of all the parts? I'm based in Ireland so finding a little difficult to source parts. Any recommendations on the easiest way to put a spool together for this setup?

Grazi Very Happy

I got my #41 chain (actually I used # 420) from a motorcycle shop

I got my axle and sprockets from these 2 places
gokartsupply.com and bmikarts.com

All my bearings and misc parts came from
northerntool.com/

Those 3 sites should get you everything else you need

Hey Montgomey, do you know of any UK / ireland stockists like northerntool or go kart supply? Just shipping and customs would be slow and costly

One question, is the only difference in parts for a #41 TAV, the chain, the rest on the shopping list on taihiti winch would be the same?
much appreciation for your guys assistence!

41# has a 1" bore, so your engine will need a 1" shaft. Thats the only other difference. Since you've already got your engine i assume it does!

Also that TAV will have a diffent number teeth on the sprocket, so your gear ratio will be different. 72 teeth on the sprocket seems to be the popular choice with the 41# tav, 12-72 ratio.

Damn! I don't know now if the engine has a 1" shaft! Are they compatible at all or will I have to get a new #35 TAV?

Probably cheaper to change the engine to suit the TAV, the engine will resell alot easier than the TAV.

Our first engine had a 20mm shaft on it, but 3/4" = 19.05mm so the tav did not fit on the shaft.

We sold out original engine on ebay and pretty much got our money back and bought a second engine with the correct shaft. cost about £20 in total to fix the mistake. so i guess it will be about the same in euro's

Check your engine and TAV, try and mount them together.

Just checked the engine and tav last night, they are the right sizes for each other both 3/4" #41
It's A tight fit getting the tav on the shaft, will hammering it on damage the engine, or is there some technique to getting it on?

you might have to notch out one of the fins on the back of the Tav2 to make it fit on your motor properly. Kind of depends on the motor you're using. I'm sure with some searching you can find a lot of helpful information on this site, and even http://winchskating.com/forums/ has a lot of good stuff too.

Right finally discovered after it being an engineer for a month that the shaft is in mm and the tav in inches.
Going to get a 3/4" motor for it now!

Was getting pulled by a 40hp boat at the weekend and after not getting up I'm going to make sure that the winch is powerful enough to deep water start!

Can you guys tell me that for sure a 6.5hp motor is powerful enough to deep water start a 90kg rider

There's an 9HP on ebay that looks like it might be worth investing into to guarantee getting up Smile

Right I ordered the 9HP 3/4" engine €250

So what I have so far is:

9HP 3/4" engine
TAV2 #41 3/4"
Frame built
600ft bullet lines cable

What sorta spool size should I build for this and how does one setup proper gearing?
sorry for the ignorance, Will get pics up later Very Happy

Yeah diego, the 9hp should pull your arms out lol,

With the TAV as well is should be a beast of a machine!!!

600ft line is perfect, be very rare you'll need more unless you've got a super long location for a pull.

As for the spool, either make one or get one where you can change the diameter, something with a 6" 7" 8" inch diameter will be fine, you can then change it around to suit your prefered speed/start pull.
