i recently heard from like three different people on my lake that you don't need a vest at all riding behind a boat. riders discretion.
you do need a uscga behind a ski though.
don't know if these rules are for michigan only or not. i'm gonna google it.

oh my bad, didn't see the o-dub on the thread title.
anyways what i heard is true.....

* Every vessel towing a person(s) on water skis, a surfboard, or a similar device must have a person, in addition to the vessel operator, observing the towed person(s) at all times.
* It is illegal to tow persons on water skis, surfboards, or any device of this type between:
o One hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise if towed behind a boat
o One hour before sunset and 8:00 a.m. if towed behind a PWC
* Persons being towed must stay at least 100 feet away from:
o Any moored or anchored vessel
o A dock or raft
o Any marked swimming area or person(s) in the water
* Those being towed behind a PWC must wear a U.S. Coast Guard—approved Type I, II, or III PFD. Inflatable PFDs may not be used.

from what is stated above, rails would be illegal.

Haha the place i ride doesn't do squat. They don't even have a Ranger on the lake. We could build rails all day if we wanted too.

Calskater23, well your damn lucky then. I may be able to not wear a vest but if i put out a rail the neighbors would be pullin out shotguns and the popo would be on me like white on rice.

Sad ...
